I don't know much about fixing or building computers but do love the games. I recently tried to install Thief 2 on my Dell Desktop. Its an XPS for gaming but Thief will not play. It installed and all the Avis ran fine, sound and picture. When the start game screen appeared if flashed on then off. It won't let me go any farther and I have no clue what to do. Plz give me some Ideas. Oh and this is Windows XP pro. It has Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, Acpi Mulitprocessor, RealTek Audio and 461 GB. Ask me if I left anything out. I'm really not sure if any of that helps. I did call Dell and they said if was the game manufacturers problem.:(:eww:

This sounds like the graphics card drivers. You'll need to install (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121449) DDFix to get it working. Download the GUI version, unzip it to your Thief 2 directory, and run the ddfixGUI.exe file.
You may run into the multi-core CPU problem as well, but DDFix should take care of that for you.

Thank you Brian. I not sure if I can do this but will give it a try. :erm::cheeky:

well, if you are frightened by DDFIX at first, you could try setting process affinty and see if that helps, but your colors might still be washed out in game.
Start thief, then ALt-Tab out and go to taskmanager. Then find the thief exe and right click on it and click set affinity. Then turn off all of the cpu cores but one and then go bakc to game. This has to be done every time.
Damn, computers have gotten to the point where they don;t even try to run thief without some sort of patch?
you may have to go with DDFIX which I think is frustrating to set up but it is worth it to see the skylines properly. Also thief one works good without DDFIX because there is no special sky and the colors are fine.

So far so good and I am afraid to say that after some of my computer experiences. It took me a bit to understand what the DDfix wanted me to do. I downloaded the GUI version, whatever that means and unzipped it but seems I needed the Thief2 fix also. It still didn't work but now I was getting a warning from my virus control that wouldn't let me use the DDfix.exe. I had to turn of the protection to get it to play. Fooled around a bit with the video and just completed the first mission for original thief. My protection is still down which makes me uncomfortable. I went to the part that is supposed to let me add new programs but it didn't work. I am hoping I can get that taken care of and get back to playing again.
I can't thank you enough for you help.:thumb::cheeky:
