(Earlier title: I realise with shame)...that I had cheated in order to complete SS2 on my first playthrough.
I'm finding the latter levels of System Shock 2 to be immensely difficult and also extremely unfamiliar, except in parts. Since I left the Von Braunn, the only real familiar spot was the church in the Rickenbacker after you discover Polito's final log.
I'm finding this to be more than a replay, but instead the first proper playthrough. As I reached the escape-pod level last night, I was suddenly hit with a memory of reaching this stage and being so armed to the teeth with incendiary grenades and an assault rifle fully loaded with AP bullets, that I realised there's no possible way I had all of that without cheating. I then remembered typing console commands and my failure became complete. :(
However, I am not cheating this time around and as a result, I'm struggling to survive. I'm debating whether or not I should attempt to fight the many that's present on the upper level of the escape-pod area or if I should just run, but then I realised that I'm probably going straight into the many anyway, so it's probably more essential that I stock up somehow. I really wish I had more psi powers now! I do have over 100 cyber modules though, that should maybe get me some good powers. :erg:

You are talking about the Rickenbacker Bridge I assume?
On the upper floor, you get 20 cyber modules if you pick up the worm launcher that can be found in a bedroom (probably the captain's). And there are some grenades & beakers on a shelf near the rocket turrets. Also, you can buy maintenance tools in the replicator if you are getting low on those. :)

Yep, the Rickenbacker bridge. Thanks for the info, I'll persevere and use all my available ammo to get the use of the extra cyber modules! :D

Don't spend too much ammo though, I'd just disable security and damage the turrets badly with a melee weapon and then get rid of them with a single shot of the AR or the laserpistol. That way you get all the goodies without using up too much ammo. :D
Oh, and keep your ears & eyes at full attention, that place is swarming with spiders and rumblers. Better have the AR and anti-personell bullets ready if you don't want to fight them with a melee weapon. :eww:

That's the issue though, I don't have nearly enough ammo to take on all the spiders and rumblers, so I'll have to hack the security and then use ICE-picks on the turrets to allow them to lay waste to the creatures. I've got max hack and max cyb anyway so I don't really need them anymore.
Still, I've got a lot of cyber modules left, so I'll use those to get the sexy psi powers like invisibility and so on.
Do I get many more attempts to upgrade between the Rickenbacker bridge and SHODAN?

There's a full set of upgrade units in the BOTM, and at the beginning of Where Am I. If I were you, I wouldn't waste ammo on the enemies on the bridge. Or an ice-pick, for that matter, unless you have more than 3. Lure them towards you one at a time if you want to kill them, otherwise, just try to run into the room, grab the launcher, and haul ass out of there.

I don't know which is your difficulty setting, so I also don't know what your 100 CMs will buy you. But if you want to make the BOTM really easy, just get PSI invisibility. And if you can also get Soma Transfer, then you won't even need any ammo for the brain room. If you don't have enough CMs, don't spend them yet, because you'll get some more in the BOTM, and you'll still find some upgrade stations.
I also don't know how many nanites you have, but you can still buy HP ammo for the AR in the BOTM. I usually get to that stage with 5000+ nanites (I recycle everything throughout the game) and then spend it all on HP bullets.

I guess I confused everyone mentioning the AR, I don't actually have one or the weapon skill to weild it - that was my first playthrough I had this.
I managed to get through a significant chunk of the Body of the Many last night purely utilising psi-invisibility. Awesome, awesome trick that. Instead of soma, I went for psi-control or whatever it's called, nueral restructuring blahblah, as I'd much rather be able to turn a rumbler onto another rumbler than try to drain 2 of them if I get in a tight spot.
Still awesome though.
D'Arcy on 18/10/2006 at 00:16
But with Soma you can enter the brain room invisible, choose a nice spot, and kill the brain using soma transfer without even having to destroy the stars.

Wait, you can do that?!
Oh well i guess the spooks had to get SOMETHING for all the headachs they had in the early game.
