I've installed Shock 2 with the -lgntforce line, and I've tried running it in windows95/98 compatability, yet I still get this message: System Shock 2 has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows. For an update that is compatible with this version of Windows, contact Electronic Arts.
I've looked in both techincal threads and neither of them mentioned that error message. Anybody know what else I can do to fix this? :(

Did you try to apply patch to System Shock 2? In my experience Windows XP gives that message if you haven't patched it.

Thanks for the info! I applied the patch...but now it gives an error message saying "System shock has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." :erg:

I am having the same problem.
What did you do to resolve your issue?

The one thing you guys don't want to try, is to enable compability. Because in SS2's case, that setting does the opposite of what it was intented to do.
There are a few reasons for that error, like something wrong regarding the codecs for the videos which is fixed by installing them from the CD or by deleting/moving/renaming the 'cutscenes' folder.
There are other reasons but I can't remember more situations from the top of my head.

Strange, enabilting win 2000 compabability is exactly what got the game working for me, and working well at that.

The effects vary. As far as I can tell, whether or not Compatibility Mode fixes SS2 depends largely on the hard disk's UUID, the colour of your case, the phase of the moon, and a random number generated from the noise on your phone line.

I tried everything to get this game going for a long time, but finally found the fix with the codecs. You can try this:

I was about to give up yet again, when I finally found this fix, and I take no credit for it as it's there in the "running ss2 on WIN XP" in this very forum.
Also if you have any game or demo using Starforce copy protection that will screw it up as well.
Good luck.

i'm thinking the cutscenes need to be redone. they're ugly as sin, and like all dark engine games there seems to be codec problems with them. someone should make spiffy animated cutscenes.
