In W98 there is a command to repair corrupted system files without a reinstall.
I know there is one you can RUN for XP and I misplaced the information that one of you tech oriented people gave me a year or so ago.
I hope someone knows the method and can talk me through it again.
Sorry to bother you again. But I don't want to use the Recovery console to attempt this. And I definetely don't want to do a wipe and reinstall. I am packing to move and all my application CDs are packed away so I can't do a reinstall as the apps I use are not available to install after I do a clean XP install.

Do you mean running "sfc /scannow" from a command prompt? If that doesn't help then you can normally re-install XP over the top of itself without needing to do a wipe which from memory doesn't require you to have to re-install all your software. However, it's been a while since I've done that and you do at least have to install the various service patches again that aren't included on your installation disk.

Al_B SFC/scannow is the one I was looking for. But The other you mention "re-install XP over the top of itself" also interests me if you come up with the information.
Thanks.

It's been a looooong time since I've done an XP overlay, so someone might need to correct me if I miss a step or two. But from what I remember, it's incredibly easy to do.
First, you obviously have to have an XP disc. Not just any disc will work, though. It has to match the version that's installed. Otherwise you won't get the repair option.
Once you get past the EULA hit-F8-to-continue BS, you should see a screen asking you to repair your current installation by hitting R, or hit escape to continue on with a fresh format/install. Obviously, you want to hit R here.
From this point on, it's an as usual XP installation. Once it's done, you'll pop back into Windows and see that all your programs, files, and directories are sitting there exactly as you left them. Congratulations. You've repaired XP. The only downside is that you will have to go through and reinstall your service packs and do all your Windows updates again. But everything else, from drivers to games, should still be there.
Simple as that.

Thanks. I have an unlimited corporate copy so I have the proper XP disc for the "overlay"

Hate to do this instead of editing. SFC/SCANNOW is the info I was looking for, but there is additional in the command structure to make it work. A simple RUN SFC/SCANNOW won't do it.

You did put the space between SFC and /SCANNOW?
