Can we combine those two please? There's really no difference at all. As I just pointed out in a thread, you can't really discuss the game without knowing about it. If you read a discussion on a game you haven't finished, it's really your own fault if someone reveals something you didn't know about.

Well, SS2Hints is really a place to put the "I am stuck at suchandsuch" or "How the holy hell do I beat this part?" discussion.
Obviously, game discussion requires a certain amount of intimate knowledge of the game's setting / universe / events etc, but it doesn't entail gameplay-specific hints and spoilers. Nor should it.
ThiefGen seems to live in harmony with Thief Spoilers. How is it different with SS2, unless people aren't using the forums properly?

(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94299) This thread is a good example of what I'm talking about. Any discussion about the game will contain information that some won't know.

So we don't need to use spoiler tags in Gen?

Actually, I don't think this thread is a good example to combine both forums. The thread doesn't belong to the Hints&Spoilers forum, as it is about a fictional ending of the game, thus not suggesting to be spoiler-heavy.
On the other hand, if I were to ask "Hey, where is the last Toxin-A?", I would do that in the Hints forum, as it is exactly that - a place to help people in need, by using spoilers. The Gen is for general Shock-related chatter, news, ideas.
Following the logic in your suggestion, someone might jump in and ask - "Why don't you combine the Tech forum and the Comm-chat? Tech-related threads are being posted on a regular basis in the Comm-chat." - not really a good idea.

No, it would be like someone talking about tech in comm, and surrounding all tech text with special obscuring tags.
You can not discuss a game in any great detail without describing things
in the game. Things people who haven't played the game may not know.
If not combine, why not remove the "no spoilers" warning for SS2Gen?

Because one is for asking for hints while you're playing, the other is for discussing the game afterwards.

Yes, you do. Its worked fine for five years and it'll continue working fine.
Gingerbread Man on 7/3/2005 at 07:21
If what you're saying is going to spoil the game, then yes.
Revealing that there's a bunch of enemies wandering around isn't going to ruin anything for anyone, but if you go on about Polito being SHODAN without using spoiler tags, you're spoiling things for people.
The Hints / Spoilers forum is for specific walkthrough / gameplay stuff. Some people find it more appropriate to discuss HEAVILY spoiler material in there. In either case, spoiler tags are just polite.
Sure, if you want to stop people breaking rules you can always remove the rules. That way no one can break them. But that's a ridiculous way to do things, and it sure isn't the way I want to see things done.
I think, if you really want to get a clear answer on this whole subject, you ought to PM D'Arcy about it.

Well, let me put it this way. In my opinion, if you haven't played a game, you'll be <i>very</i> appreciative of spoilers, and will appreciate two different forums for general and help with the game discussions. For example, back in my lurking days prior to playing SS1, I avoided spoilers about SS1 because I wanted to play it for myself one day. Thanks to spoiler tags, all I knew about SS1 was what I'd been told in SS2. They're very well handled over at the SS1+2 forums.
Now, let's roll on over to the Thief forums. No offense to anyone who goes there or moderates there, but it seems like Thief 1 + Thief 2 General forums, spoilers are often discussed together there. For example, when I simply was trying to find out who did the voice acting for a character introduced during a post mission cutscene, I was completely spoiled to the Thief 2 ending. In the Hints and Spoilers forums, T1+T2 spoilers often go hand in hand, so I knew everything that was going to happen in Thief Gold by the time I played it. I still had a blast with it, but I would've preferred not knowing anything about it.
