About a year ago my little Mr. Coffee went to the Starbucks in the Sky. I haven't yet replaced it, yet my wonderful FIL loves coffee and will be visiting sometime this June. This man climbed up and helped me install a metal roof on our new outbuilding, considering he's afraid of heights, that's some sweetness there. So I'd like to get a new coffeemaker before he visits. My budget is fifty dollars tops.
I could just get another baby coffeemaker like my previous one, which made about two cups; or I could get one of those little stovetop expresso gizmos. These little gizmos fascinate me, but I've never used one. They have the advantage that I actually like lattes and mochas and might use one for myself once in a while. Anyone here have informed opinions on them? If they don't work, I'll just get a little dripper and store it unless FIL's around.
I do have a coffee grinder, one of the ones with the little blades that whirl around. Braun, I think. So I don't have to fit a grinder in the budget.

do you drink coffee often? if so i'd say the stove top deals are great! but kind of a bitch to clean... well, the one i had was... worked great though. i could make 18 cups if i wanted!

No, I drink it maybe every other month. I might go to once a week if I could make the fancier stuff at home though.

I never have liked the taste of coffee (tea for me). I just came in here to wish you a happy birthday, J&T. :)

The stove top espresso makers definitely work, half of Italy uses them (they don't all have electronic coffee wonders at home) and they should know. I know as well because I use mine every day.

(A)I would recommend a Krups coffee maker or a large Mr. Coffee. They are (were) cheap, reliable, and (depending on the coffee) made a good cup, every cup. Get the one that handles 12 cups per pot. The baby coffeemakers aren't bad for yourself, nor are the espressomakers. But you're entertaining and you need something which won't make your guests wait a few minutes between brews.
(B)Stay away from the Bodum coffee presses.
(C)Also, don't forget the coffee rules:
(C1)Decaf and instant coffee are forbidden.
(C2)pick a cup (any cup) and make it your favorite coffee cup. After you drink coffee from it, rinse it out, wash the outside BUT DON'T WASH THE INSIDE. The coffee stains inside the cup increase the flavor of your next cup, the cup after that, and so on. This methodology and rule also applies to the coffee pot.
(C3)Ladies may, in their discretion, use cream and/or sugar to enhance their coffee experience. Gentlemen must drink their coffee black. No exceptions.
Failure to abide by these rules will result in no coffee nirvana for you.

Screw that. I don't care how nice silk drawers feel, I'm not putting on a dress just because I like cream.
HBD J&T
Stockings maybe.

get the espresso thingy. it sounds fun. i don't know anything about them, but i have this big metal kitchenaid box that makes coffee just fine, so i'd be compelled to assume the quality is consistent.
