Oh well, fun movie :)

Late to the party, but I had to say I thought this movie was darn cool for a change. After a year of pretty lacklustre "blockbusters" whose trailers were miles better than the film and were actually pretty terrible all around for no real reason (I'm looking at you 300 and Transformers), this movie was actually decently entertaining for the bulk of its runtime. Hooray.
The only part I really didn't enjoy was the opening. I don't know how old these people are supposed to be, but they look twenty something at least yet converse and goss like 16yr olds. I was fading fast throughout the party, culminating in that horrid heart to heart on the fire escape. I'd had enough of this sub Hidden Palms crap by then and was reaching for the FF>> when Kaboom!. \o/ Movie saved! Just in time. The movie continued with largely terrible dialogue and weak acting (well Marlena was a much needed bright light), but it still worked. The small screen didn't seem to hurt it much, the thrills seemingly intact (although, how would I know. It probably make the shakeycam easier to take though). Many a joke has been made about the super camera they are using, but not only does it have awesome battery life and memory and is virtually indestructable it also must have the most astounding set of high fidelity microphones known to earth science! Clearly this movie is set in the future.
The monster was pretty cool, though I could have done without it appearing just about everywhere. Actually if they just took out the end bit I'd be happy, that was kinda one too many dips at the disbelief well and such a large one too.
Oh well, in general Hooray for Cheap, Novel "Big Movies".

I'm working on my own version of a Cloverfield type movie and it kicks its ass.

It's just you looming and making faces while a small child holds the camera isn't it.
Own up.

shit you've seen it
i bet it was my fucking cinematographer that leaked it on the net
did it have "for your consideration" embossed on the bottom of the screen?

Yeah. This is what happens when you scrimp on craft service in the budget see, tsk.
(I've been trying to figure out what it is about that damn creature. It's oddly familiar. I guess that's the idea of a design like that. But designed vague familarity aside I reckon it's a damn giant bat without wings/skin for the wings (give or take weird vestigal legs on its torso). It was also pointed out to me that in the Coney Island bit at the end you can see a large object crash into the sea, which is pretty cool, despite being yet another instance of that camera being at the right place at the right time)

When you say coney island bit, do you mean after the tape cuts out then cuts back in again after the nuke?
Muzman on 16/4/2008 at 03:49
Yeah it's in the tail end of the flick, one of the bits that didn't get "taped over". They're on the train and the camera is looking out to sea.
