I kind of liked the movie. Also: reading through all these posts with the easter eggs I seem to have missed makes me want to see it again...
Also, does the name 'Cloverfield' imply something my dictionary wont tell me (as a non-native english speaker)? I don't get the reference to the literal translation then.
What raised my eyebrow at the beginning of the movie was: Would the average american really stand unimpressed in front of the severed head of the Statue of Liberty and make pictures with the mobile - or was that meant to be a joke?

Cloverfield is the former name of Central Park where the videotape was found.
As for the head of the Statue of Liberty, nationality has little to do with it. Once they picked their jaws up off the ground, and/or realised that standing in awe is not very productive, picture taking is one of the next choices. Look at all the videos made around the world where someone with a camera captured astonishing moments. What makes it possible is that those kinds of moments seem so unreal, it takes time for it to sink in, so you can think about other things, often absurd things.

Thanks for clearing that up (both points);
Yes, shock might let you do considerable (un-)reasonable things -- I was perhaps wondering that nearly everyone in the frame (10 people?) were taking their pictures. (Or I'm just an egoist, since I am not used to taking pictures all the time :p )

But when old mate has feet the size of two or more army trucks, rips a helicopter out of the sky with its gadget arms then shows up at the chopper crash site and looks about 20 feet tall max... what just happened
Yeah, I thought that was a pretty major fuck-up. I thought the monster looked the best in the very first glimpse, when it was moving between buildings and the only discernable thing about it was its ominous size. I try to forgive a lot because I liked the movie, but I'm in the same camp as those who think that less would've been better.

Actually, it's got to do with the studio office addresses and was initially the code-name for the movie. It's possible that it was simply going to be named 1-18-08, but the Internet took "Cloverfield" and ran with it. Weirder things have happened
*cough*snakesonaplane*cough* ;)

What I said wasn't in the opening text?
Damn confabulation again....:nono:
It doesn't really contradict what you said, though, since--if I am remembering something correctly--they used it in the movie after the codename stuck.

You`ve not seen how many people record stuff/take photos, with their mobiles these days? Remember that suicide bomb attack at that airport in england a year ago or whatever it was? The first footage of that was from a mobile. The amount of times I`ve seen mobile recordings of plane crashes, and brawls at hotels, on tv. That was one part in the movie where I was sitting there thinking to myself, yep thats exactly what would happen.
Just got back from the cinemas from seeing it and I FUCKING LOVED IT. It was the first movie in a very long time to have me totally on the edge of my seat as video-cam view tends to put you more in a "your there too" style viewpoint.
Spoilers from here on
I especially enjoyed the first big marines and tank vs big alien thingy battle. Was SO GOOD to finally see a battle of that kind from that viewpoint, rather than the standard movie style. I`ve seen zillions of movies by now, and so in most movies I can generally guess where the movies going and whats going to happen. But in this one I had no fucking clue at all.
The only thing I knew was that the city was going to be gone by the end of the movie since it mentions it at the very beginning. Also the bit with night vision in the tunnel was a dead giveaway. Though those face hugger like thingoes were very cool looking.
This was one of the first movies in a longtime where I was cheering on the good guys for a change, as I wanted that big alien thingo to die. But no matter what they threw at it, it got back up again. The fact that it just happened to smash the helicopter was a bit lame.
The only part in the movie where I really got annoyed though was when they did the closeup of the big alien as it towered over them, with those breathing pad thingoes. It was so obviously done in CG that it took me out of it totally. Shame Hud died there. He was a total dumbass, but he was a likeable dumbass after a while. I liked the overall love arc of the film as well. Usually in alien invasion films, if theres a love story to it, then its really lame or cheesy. But in this one it was done quite well. I fully expected her to be dead by the time he reached her in the apartment though.
Lastly I DEFINATELY agree that it is a "see at the movies" style movie, just as Blair Witch was. Having seen Blair Witch both in the movies where it was excellent, and on video where it was totally crap, I highly recommend to any of those considering waiting until this is on dvd to get to the movies right now and see it cause you`ll absolutely hate it if you see it on video. Its just that kindof movie. Some movies are only good in the cinema and this is one of them.
I`d gladly go and see this one again. Excellent from start to finish. Except that I was one of the many people in the cinema, that yelled out "AWWW WHAT YOU CANT END IT LIKE THAT!!" when it finished lol.

Yeah, you're still right about that. At the beginning the tape is labelled something about "video (or disc or whatever) of the incident known as Cloverfield, found in what used to be Central Park"

You know, I kind of liked Hud. Yeah, he was annoying, but at least he had a bit of personality and was funny... unlike the other guy, whose name I can't even remember (the guy who wants to save his girlfriend). That guy was just kind of dull.
Kind of liked the gothy chick too. Forget her name also. Geez!
