No but, the film wasn't too bad, it just didn't match the hype. BUT IT WAS STILL GOOD.
I don't doubt it in the least. I haven't seen it yet, but I really want to -- especially before it leaves theatres, because I think it's going to lose 90% of what it has when it translates to a small screen without that thunderous cinema-surround sound.
I'm just hyperbusy most of the time and haven't had any kind of chance to see it. But boy oh boy do I love me a monster flick more than pretty much any other sort of film...
I'm under the impression that
Cloverfield is a pure and perfect monster movie, unburdened by complicated plot, deep characters, or backstory. Which -- in my opinion -- is the best kind of monster movie. I don't want to have to wade through yet another pseudo-scientific, convoluted explanation / theory / exposition about the monster because that's NOT HOW THINGS WOULD GO. How things would go is that suddenly there's a big fuck-off beast trampling the city and everyone's running like crazy ants trying to stay out of its goddamned way.
Doesn't alter the validity of my previous comments, though.
Quake 4 was utter shit, but I replayed it more often than I replayed most other games.
lol gbm u r a study in contrasts

This is exactly correct. Your previous comment is not so much.

The monster turns out to look like a fucking dicynodont (tusked herbivorous pig-lizard of the permian, fairly inoffensive), but apart from that this film is fucking great! I actually had an adrenaline rush at a few points, which is a very rare response to films on my part. I needed a drink afterwards. Phew.

I had spent the entire week in a windowless shed in a louisiana swamp dissecting alligators. That kind of thing builds up a certain mindset.

It wasn't too bad. Reminds me of seeing all the usual big action block busters. Godzilla, Armageddon etc, they're ok to see once or twice but after that it's done.
Cloverfield had average suspense by not actually showing you the monster for as long as they could. I wasn't too fussed on the '911 handycam-duststorm' thing. In fact for most of the movie I was saying to myself "oh, I wonder were that bit came from  ". It's just a big mashup of every major blockbuster but on shakeycam FOR XTRA REALISMS. Was interesting, characters weren't
I was gonna leave with all the screaming going on, couldn't stand that shit. Not quite unnecessary but just overused and just adds to the idea that its a blockbuster type of film.

I saw it in an empty theater today (well, it is the middle of the week and I did catch the afternoon show, so no surprise there) and I really loved it. The most fun I've had in the theaters in awhile now (last film I saw on the big screen was "Saw IV," which was a total mess... should have just ended with the third one and let it be). I like how you only get small glimpses of the monster itself, it's origin is never explained (in the film, at least... I've heard there's a manga or something that provides back story?). So you're just as confused as the characters are, which is pretty cool. And the shaky camera work really added to the picture, the destruction came off as very realistic, very creepy. Great film. Of course, I've always had a soft spot for monster movies, having been a huge Godzilla fan as a child (hell, I cried at the end of the first Godzilla film).

Probably not as many as have seen Gojira.
