I've heard the story is actually worse than SoC, which I thought was pretty rubbish, so is this true? I've also heard that the side characters are pretty bad in this one
Yes and yes, story is crap in CS.
About SoC's story, I personally thought it was great, don't know why some think it's rubbish. It's sinister, obscure (which is good in my book, it leaves room for imagination), quite complex, not narrative but revealed in a non straightforward way (which is good in my book too).

Well, what I didn't like about the story in SoC was that it quite obviously a classic case of a stroy being grafted onto the game at the end. The characterisation was universally weak which didn't help the Strelok story at all and the twist regarding Strelok was quite obvious, to me at least, half an hour in. I was also quite liking the vagueness of the Zone itself until the plot came down with a fatal case of deus-ex-machina.
I have no problem with unconventional or obscure story-telling but I really think SoC was more of a case of simply sloppy story-telling. I don't get where you are getting this 'revealed in a non straight-forward way' from since the only way it was progressed was having characters give you a page of poorly written exposition every time you completed a main quest. I think because STALKER so convincingly created this sprawling non-linear gameworld made some people think the story was more than the half-arse attempt at narrative that it really was.

While I'd normally give CS a limited recommendation, if you feel strongly about SoC's fairly decent story (yeah, it is told in a horribly unimaginative quest exposition style, though I found its twist nowhere near as obvious as, say, Kotor's much hyped one) I would not play CS.
I paid $60 for CS and it was worth it, despite the problems it gave me.

I enjoyed SOC for the most part. But CS? Aside from a couple of decent set pieces, this was the biggest mess of a game I have ever played. It was like a bunch of underdeveloped ideas and levels pieced together.

Yeah, but I still like CS more than most of latest polished new games that got 90%+ from reviewers.

Any AMK or OL-esque mods out for CS yet? I, like many other people i guess, think it's bull that I can't find any med packs etc. and that It takes a good 5000+ bullets to kill anyone cuz only headshots matter and most of the guns are outrageously inaccurate.
Also, if you made a group hostile (Stalkers) and you need to join them for a quest, how do one get back on good terms with them?

Clear Sky is considered inferior to SHOC by the GSC community as far as I can tell. That's why modding has all gone back to SHOC (Dez0wave is making Lost Alpha, the community at large is at work on Supermod and NatVac is back on work with the latest Zone Reclamation Project).
