i had the same in the swamps. i sprinted through, constantly energy drinking and never got any missions completed because ClearSky just took over everything after i did....2 quests i think.
Well, then they really designed it that way, easy intro.

there's nothing to do in the swamps. I didn't even care about the xtra-quests and just moved up to cordon.
Lots of money can be made there though, many easy "bring me 3 x 9x18" type of secondary quests, and at least 6 artifacts.

btw, how did YOU get past the machine gun turret ?
I cheated and took the other levelchanger to cordon in the north of the swamps ;)
Same way as you :) I guess they designed the machine gun way impassable.

i don't think so because in cordon you get blocked by the stalker faction although you "have" to get to sidirovich to continue your mission.
so what I did after I saw that they won't let me through is just sprint past them. when I returned after the visit with Sidirov. they were neutral.
so I think there should be a way past the gun, in the latest patch notes they even wrote something about making the gunner vulnerable or sthg.
yeah, i know what you mean about the swamp, you could stay there and explore a little more but after the "WTF ?" start of the "faction wars" I decided to concentrate first on the main quest, next playthrough (with more patching I presume) I will explore the mechanics of STALKERing (trading, looting, exploring) or the lack thereof.

There is a guide in the Stalkers base who can bring you to the Novices village.

Well, at least Swamps were really huge (comparing with other Stalker maps), I think 4 times larger than Cordon, and beautiful.

It is possible to dodge to gunner at the military check point. I took a few hits on my way past, but I survived.
Not easy or fun, though. Took me several attempts and I was swearing like mad.

Christ. I wish PC games were returnable, cause this game sucks.
Ran into my first blowout today. Right after joining the stalkers, get a message to go take the bandit base. Walk into the garbage, blowout starts.
First, I don't go anywhere. Reach cover is kind of vague, and the five guys sitting around the fire didn't seem worried. Result: All five of us die instantly when the cosmic time runs out.
Reload. Open the PDA to see if there is a location I'm supposed to go as the arbitrarily selected cover point. And there is.
The fucking bandit base.
Instant death races are never ever fun. Instant death races where the place you have to reach and the wait are a fucking enemy base are total bullshit.
So we've got instant death machine guns, scoped rifles that still don't fire in anything even remotely resembling a straight line, the zone turned into multiplayer control point botmatch, invisible artifacts universally hidden in anomaly death fields, half of which irradiate you if you dare try to fucking use them, and instant death races to face the firing squad.
What the fuck were they thinking? Shadow of Chenobyl had plenty of flaws, but this just is one big flaw.

Something tells me I should wait for this game to end up in the bargain bins. . .

Well, but machine guns ARE very deadly. You shouldn't try direct approach when you seek to avoid or destroy it.

They are
formed there, not "universally hidden" ;)

Yes, you have to compensate radioactive effect of some artifacts with some anti-radiation artifact(s), the same was in SoC. BTW, what now is +/-1 +/-2 +/-3 etc. to some effect actually is more like +/-10 +/-20 +/-30 etc. if compared with SoC.

Well, at least it's MUCH more interesting than Spore or CoD4 I tried recently. Actually it's just a stand alone add-on. I'm now finishing Cordon after Swamps - no one crash or serious glitch that I could notice (1.5.04). If you love SoC, you're obliged to play CS and you will certainly like it more than most of modern games anyway. It has major flaws compared with SoC, but also it has very nice new features, improved and beautiful graphics, new quests, there is a nice feeling that factions war is going independently from you, you may help or not, but factions live and act all by themselves. I guess CS factions war and relations really is a very complex system for programming, so some errors and glitches are excusable as for me. I'd prefer complex even if quite buggy game mechanics to 100% polished but fully scripted linear one any day, in Stalker as well as in any other game. I salute developers who try to experiment and risk.

I had that, and yes it is fucking stupid.
But there are several places you can hide in on each map, it just selects the nearest one. It seems it doesn't take into account the fact that the hideout was held by hostile NPCs. I imagine that'll be corrected in the next patch.
Jashin on 20/9/2008 at 18:39
Still in the swamp, so far everything's peachy. Swamp beats Cordon up easy as a starter map.

Can anyone confirm that you get stuck if you try to go into the Agroprom underground (through the hole) too early?
