I suppose the exclusivity concerns the digital download format only.

If the boxed version (if any) requires Steam to be installed then it looks like I'll have to say goodbye to an otherwise eagerly anticipated sequel. I'm still not ready to install that crap on my machine.

Umm, just turn off the Steam Service in msconfig if you dont want it in the background, isnt harder than that... Never had any problems with it.

Cool. I might actually have a chance of buying it, then. I don't like Steam all that much either, but it's nice to have the option to download it instead of getting the boxed version (if any) shipped all the way from Timbuktu.

...and are there any other ways of digital means of getting a game than Steam?

i understood that the game gets released digitally on steam, retail will have the game as well. since it's no Valve game I can't imagine that installing steam is mandatory. As much as I like Steam, if the normal box art is in any way good, I'm getting it. maybe even the russian version :) since ClearSky will feature the same russian/english esperanto babble like SOC.
lalalalalalalalalalalalaaaa, a new stalker, a new stalker, a new stalker game
i'm a happy fps player :)

I already have Steam installed and am a happy user, so this doesn't bother me.

It's just Steam exclusive with regards to digital distribution. This doesn't really say anything about their retail situation. As for other digital distributers, off the top of my head I can think of Direct2Drive, though no others. Though that might be because I have zero interest in digital delivery and don't really pay attention to it.

Yes, it does:
"The official prequel to the Survival FPS game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is currently slated for
simultaneous release on Steam and at retail outlets later this year."

"(...)later this year."
This sentence is just
bad.
By the way, "A group of stalkers has, for the first time, reached the very heart of the Zone-Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant-and brings about a cataclysm on the brink of a catastrophe."
Isn't that in the conflict with original story?
