Clear Sky only has 2 features which are DX10 exclusive: dynamic wet surface and volumetric fog. It's not worth getting Vista just for those to me, though they are tempting.

Vista is not just DX10. It's a much better OS than XP, that reason alone is enough to use it imo.

Much improved search function, many other small improvments that i really like, e.g if i want to go to a certain map i can just click the shortcut for that application or game and select "open file location" and i'm there. Much better file copy (more informative, can do smarter selections of what to do with files etc).
I've read that the memory mapping is much improved as well in Vista. Games works great, i even find it easier to start really old games that were hard to get to function in XP.
Small things perhaps but you use them every day, i could never go back to XP.. it would be like going back from XP to Win98..
So what's your argument why its not better? Or perhaps i misunderstood your smiley??

There is lots of little annoying things about vista that you use "everyday". Its an even trade and not really that much better than XP. So as I see it I'm better off just staying with XP and saving myself $200.
Also it really does not help that MS is trying to sell vista by putting up game companies to not develop the full dx9 path so dx10 looks better because 'running better' is not shiny enough to sell an OS. Dx10 is not mature and game makers are in the 'transition point' where they have to develop for both paths which leads to dx10 not even running as well as it should because its new and these guys are on a timetable.
Anyway the whole issue stinks of their incompetence while they call us stupid behind our backs. Honestly I never really started hating MS till this business.

Like what? Almost everything is tweakable.
...and _buying_ an OS?! yeah right, like anyone with half a brain is doing that ;)

This.
While the two effects that are DX10 exclusive are really damn neat, they still aren't enough to convince me to hand over a hefty chunk of change for what's ultimately a fatter version of what I'm using now.
When DX10 comes into its own, Vista matures with SP2, and someone comes out with something like XPLite for it, I'll make the upgrade. Until then, I'll think of Vista as nothing more than really pretty resource hog of a UI mod for XP.

This. Shows you dont have a slightest clue.
Vista is already far more mature than XP, gfx drivers are far more mature too. There are numerous tests that shows its just as fast as XP after SP1 which is impressive since it has a bit more stuff going on (and again, everything can be tweaked)..
From the way you "argue" im guessing you've never ventured further in an OS than changing how it looks, lol..

Me and my souped up epeen E-Machine says otherwise, cocknuts. I've rigged the hell out of this machine. Even went as far as diving into the bios once (that's stuff only MCSE certified guys do). And you know what? I CHANGED SOME STUFF IN THERE TO MAKE IT GO FASTER!
My computer also has a turbo button. It's always on.

First off, how can a year and a half old OS be more mature than one out on the scene for about 8 years now? Secondly, no matter how mature the drivers are or whatever, Vista still doesn't improve upon XP enough to justify the price tag for me.
Yeah, there are a few things I like about Vista. My experiences with superfetch were quite nice, for instance. Aero is nifty. In fact, the whole UI is quite cool, if not a little overly busy at times.
But on the flipside, there are alot of things I don't like about Vista. Like the 20 gig install, for one. Why an OS would ever need to be that large is beyond me. I've got a 320 gig drive, and it still bothers the hell out of me.
AND
All the crap you need to turn off to get Vista running without throwing warnings your way every 5 seconds. I know I can turn this off, but it shouldn't be on in the first place. This'll only ever be fixed when someone decides to do a Vista equivalent of XPLite. The fact I'll have to rely on a 3rd party app to fix this is quite sad to me.
(Addendum to the above. An OS should be as transparent as possible. Vista likes to remind me I'm using Vista all the damn time.)
AND
Some things are a little too complicated for their own good. I still have horrible nightmares filled with blood involving me trying to log onto my wireless network with the damn thing.
AND
I know I can finally get XP equivalent game performance out of Vista now that SP1 is out. That's a good thing. But you know what? I get XP performance out of XP already, and I don't have to spend another dime to get it.
AND
DX10, besides having a few neat features here and there, has yet to wave it's titties in my face and convince me the upgrade is worth it.
...plus some more stuff.
Edit: I miss being able to make a quick link bar along the left side of my screen. I'm about the only person in the world that does this, I think. But damn, I love it so.
Really. Truthfully. Honestly. Ultimately. Despite my bitching above, Vista isn't all that bad. Some of the negatives above can be fixed quite easily, I know. But at the end of the day, when I'm looking at both of them side by side, I don't see much of an incentive to leave XP and jump on board the Vista boat. Simple as that. Not enough new, too much of the same, some worse. That ain't a good reason to go spend $200 to me.

They didnt build Vista from the ground and up, isnt this your "main argument" that its just xp with pretty colors? Some new bugs are always introduced but they sorted that out with SP1 for the most part. To me it feels much more mature than XP, feels more stable, has small improvments that just makes it more fluid to work with.
The OS is as transparent as you want it to be, if you leave everything on as default that's your problem. There's a good reason why the default settings is in "n00b-mode". If you've ever listened to, or read, what a OS support employee has to explain for a newbie (or just a really stupid person) you'll know.. I admit its even worse than in XP, but I dont care about that the slightest, it took me like ~5 minutes to fix.
Cost of the OS, yeah, i really cant argue with you there.. But I've seen this as the main argument against Vista even on the warez-scene forums like nforce, isonews etc. IRL just a small fraction of the people that uses this argument really buys their OS's. Most people are just conservative in nature and wants to defend "their" OS, especially since upgrading is always a hassle, its easier just to listen to the haters so they can continue to believe they have the best OS available. I've been a PC user since the 386 and i've seen this behavior for almost every OS that has been released so far.
