there is some "realistic weapons" and "upgrade fix" mod out. then there exists a sharper texture mod. don't ask me the exact name, but that was all I used.yeah, and the float mod for CS making SSAO perform better. but there are almost no "real" mods that change it up significantly out there. SOC and now COP are much better suited to mod (and much better games).

Yeah, I thought I'd wait until the UK version of CoP comes out before playing it, and I've already played SoC to death with a vengeance. Clear Sky was certainly not without it's faults, but there definitely is a good game in there. I've installed the Stalker Immersion Mod, but looks like I'm still figuring out mod conflicts, so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

Sky Reclamation Project seems like an obvious choice.

Try the (
http://www.gsc-game.com/main.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr2&thm_page=1&thm_id=20684&sec_id=21) SMRTER Zone Alpha mod. (Go to page two for the "rebuild" version, not the first one.)
No view bob, you start with an accurate, decent weapon and over 1200+ bullets for it. There's a ton of other improvements, extra quests and tweaks, and apart from Sky Reclamation Project, this is probably the "best" version of Clear Sky out there.
I've reached the point just before
attacking the bridge at Limansk, i.e. the point of no return, have ignored the quest and begun "free play". The game is still frustrating, and you'll die a lot on the hardest mode - use a lot of saved games - but either play on an easier mode, or go in knowing it'll be hardcore. Once you reach the same point I have, forget the plot and just mosey around mopping up bandits and mutants, helping your faction of choice. It becomes somewhat compelling then, if for a while.
Call of Pripyat is superior in every possible way, though.
Edit: Fixed link.
steo on 23/12/2009 at 20:31
Your link points to the wrong thing. View bob never bothered me, and don't like the idea of starting with a really good gun, for balancing reasons. Still, could be a good base for a mod, if I edited to my tastes. Not sure I can really be bothered though. I presume upgrades are broken in this mod as well, since doing them properly for all the new weapons and such would take hella time.
chis on 25/12/2009 at 08:31
You DON'T start with "a really good gun". It has poor handling, and, whilst accurate, has a large amount of recoil to balance it. It is also NOT upgradeable.
It's basically there to offset the still hideous accuracy of enemies.
Play it anyway, Steo, and stop complaining. Because I guarantee if you play vanilla instead, it'll be WORSE. Clear Sky, even with this mod, is pretty hardcore and can be a drag until you get decent armour. This makes it a little more bareable. And yes all the usual weapon upgrades are still possible. This mod is popular for a reason:
(pasted from one of SMRTPHNUSRs's posts)

- added alife to mutants and npc
- better, more aggressive ai
- reworked respawn system
- new, more compact HUD and an improved inventory
- more than 1500 new spawns
- reworked faction wars with much bigger battles
- new and additional anomalies (i.e. monolith zone, no gavitation zone)
- changed storyline
- new smart terrains (i.e. military outposts in swamps and cordon)
- existing anomalies have been moved
- all old mutants like burer, fracture or phantom have been implemented (+ new subcategories)
- new artifacts
- dozens of new quest npc
- toolbox for repairing weapons and armor in the field

- more npc in stalkerbase and loner village
- dozens of new levelchangers
- inventory box in clear sky base
- new level- and physics objects
- changed startup equipment and quest rewards
- more variations in the look of mutants and npc outfits
- teleporters that take you beyond level restrictions and points of tactical value.
- freeplay after completing the main quest
- chopper in the swamps
- Assault rifles, snipers and shotguns can be placed in pistol slot
- npc look for better weapons or use their knife if they have to
- all areas of stancia2 level have been unlocked and equipped with enemies
- agroprom underground (all areas) can be entered more than once.

I just got CS during the steam holiday sale (I'd heard it was bad, but I loved SoC and this was only $5), and I'm looking for something like Oblivion Lost or AMK to use with it.
The immersion mod in the op sounds pretty good, and other promising ones I heard about are CS Enhanced and Old Good Stalker Mod CS. However, I'm having trouble getting hold of OGSM; I can find the russian version (
http://www.ogsmod.ru/) here with the patch, but the translation file I have causes a crash every time I install it (and the latest version of OGSM has apparently not been translated yet). The problem is, I can't seem to find this translation anywhere but on (
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=279554&page=6) this forum post, and that's the file that is seemingly causing my crash on load issue.
(
http://privat.bahnhof.se/wb220832/stalker/ceanos.download.html) Ceano's mods also look like a good addition, but they're more like small tweaks than the gameplay changes I'm looking for.
I'm going to try that immersion mod now, but it does seem rather outdated now... It's a bit of a shame that CS turned out so bad that the mod community basically dropped it; not that I know how bad it is yet, I have yet to play more than 15 minutes, but after seeing how much more awesome SoC was with mods vs vanilla, I'm not even going to attempt playing vanilla cs.

Try SMRTER! There's also Total Factional Warfare, but that removes the main storyline. CS is the "black sheep" of the series, it has its charms but once Call of Pripyat gets a proper release I think most fans will just move onto that for modding and everything really.
mcnostril on 27/12/2009 at 00:16
I'd like to try SMRTER, but it's on rapidshare, making it pretty much impossible to download at this point (at least for me). It's quite annoying, as it does sound good. I guess I'll be able to download it eventually...
I did manage to get OGSM working properly with the translation by using beyond compare and merging it manually; it even works with the latest version (although some bits are still not quite done). My biggest problem with it right now is that somehow OGSM removes the news tickers that appear whenever something plot relevant is said and just leaves the quest updates - it's not a major problem, but I like to play with the full russian audio since the english version often makes me cringe (for all I know it's also cringe worthy in russian, but I am blissfully ignorant of that).
I also found another mod called (
http://www.gsc-game.com/index.php?t=community&s=forums&s_game_type=xr2&thm_page=1&thm_id=21915&sec_id=21) Spartan 11 that isn't too bad. It's got a bunch of rubbish changes like stupid menus and terrible scopes (all of which are easily removed), but it's been alright so far. It did nail that feeling of being in constant danger just walking through the swamp, but it does have it's share of annoying things.
I'll probably end up going back to ogsm even without the subtitles (maybe I can figure out why they're not showing up just with this particular mod), unless SMRTER turns out to be totally awesome - I'm a bit worried about the "changed storyline" bits seeing as this is basically the first playthrough and the fact that every single mod that changes story usually has godawful ideas and writing (case in point, the spartan mod above is pretty neat, but good lord is the writing terrible).
