Certainly joking about the price - though it's a factory overclocked model, and the sale is genuine - offers very welcome.
I have my sights on purchasing a Radeon 4870, though I shall wait for something second generation with a good cooler, instead of the generic one.

I just changed my HD3870 drivers from Catalyst 8.5 to recently released Catalyst 8.9, and the game became like 2 times more fluid! (enhanced full dynamic lighting, all on high except antialiasing, 1024x768). It wasn't THAT bad before with those settings, but now it's almost as fluid as SoC was in ordinary full dynamic lighting mode. If you have newer Radeon, give it a try. Maybe Cat8.8 or 8.7 have the same effect as 8.9, I don't know, but 8.5 -> 8.9 difference is VERY noticeable.

Okay, I got it installed and tried out the swamp.
xp sp3
duo 3.0
4g ram
9800 gtx
1680x1050 default
It strangely runs better than the first game. Yup, better. I replayed stalker on the exact same rig and it'd freeze on occasions to "stream" new zones ahead of me, swamp in CS loads too with the lil floppy icon but it doesn't freeze up. I'm gonna tweak it a little more later.
Swamp area is also strangely "beautiful" with everything on max. I've already taken the area and can now move onto cordon. So far playing on stalker difficulty, can easily do master but I'm gonna learn all the ropes first.

would be VERY strange if the swamp didnt run well considering how barren it is. It runs at least 3x as fast as the first area which is far more detailed. The first game is more detailed as well, doesnt have any areas that are as low on polygons as the swamp i believe.

Then WTF are you complaining about?
Read the tweakguide, I don't need to tweak this at all. It runs awesome.

I have around 28 FPS average (tweaked the hell out of it) on the first level which, imo, is bad since it is worse than what i get in Crysis, and it looks better too. I doubt most levels will be as low on polygons as the swamp.
Anyways, here's a tweak that actually works and i don't think many people knows about. I only have 2 cores, but it gave me at least 2 FPS extra, i'm sure people with quad cores will have a bigger increase in FPS.
"This helps me in getting equal load on all 4 cores.
As you can see we have 100% load on 1st CPU core and 0-10% on 2nd and so on with multicores CPU used. Just want add some hint about this trouble:
- start game and wait for intro start playing or game menu displayed
- press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC for call Task Manager (if it doesn't try ALT+TAB, WINKEY or CTRL+ALT+DEL and start it way you do)
- in Task Manager go to "processes tab" and find xrEngine.exe press RMB on it then select "Affinity" - you will see that all cores are used
- unselect all cores except 1st press "OK"
- now enter xrEngine.exe Affinity settings again and select all cores back to use then press "OK"
- press ALT+TAB to switch back in STALKER process
- now play and see the difference on ingame cores load - on AMD/Intel multicore CPUs i have seen 50-70% for"

Yeah this game could definitely use some optimization. I've had to drop the resolution down quite a bit to get SoC level playability. Once you get over the initial dissapointment at seeing the game run so poorly it's not so bad.
One bug that has been "bugging" me and I'm wondering if there's a fix for, is the fact that the sun moves west to east. Either that or the map is reversed and the top is south. Which I suppose explains why Prypiat is where it is, but then the geography just doesn't make any sense. I wonder why it is they did this, since it seems pretty obvious, especially with them fancy sun rays.

It's the feature from original game :D Actually, it's very easy to fix/mod, but I don't know if such mod already exists for CS, or how to fix it "manually".

I recall having to download a mod to get the sun to actually move across the sky in SoC.
Is this actually a "feature" as opposed to a bug? Have I missed a reason why this is? Is it just another thing that's eerie and off about the Zone?
