I hate to be the asshole who signed up to a forum just to talk about something I did, but I felt that maybe someone might be interested here, since we're all Thief fans. Also, I wanted an excuse to sign up beyond "Thief 4 is looking interesting", so here we go.
I took the Thief 1 inspired outfit in John P's Texture Pack and kind of retextured and edited it heavily to look more like Garrett does in the cover art of the older games. While the Thief 1 inspired outfit does look pretty accurate to Garrett's outfit in TDP's cutscenes, I felt like the gray parts were a little to bright, and Garrett didn't seem very "thief-y". Anyway, let me know what you people think, I may put up an upload it to a website if there is any sort of demand for it (demand as in, maybe two people want to try it out).

Hi there and welcome to the forums! So you basically painted all the blue parts...more or less dark grey? The thing is, I could need a re-worked Garrett texture (right now I'm using JohnP's, too), but unless your images are a bit misleading, I don't like that it looks less vivid or organic (more like a track suit). Plus, I actually like the blue colour because it's something different from the usual black – which doesn't help much with hiding etc. since it's often darker than the environment – and has more of a regular clothing attitude than some special agent camo suit. So without trying to demand anything from you, do you think we might get a compromise by tweaking your current design a bit?
By the way, by "cover art of the older games" you can only refer to the T2 stuff, but even then, more so with T1, (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/paintings/) most artworks show him with dark blue clothing. JohnP's might be a bit too bright, I agree, but personally I wouldn't want it simply dark grey either.

Like a tracksuit huh? I tried to make his shirt look tunic-ish with the lines running down the middle, like in the cover art of the games, while the pants were just supposed to be simple trousers. The intent was basically to try to achieve a look that seemed like a thief would wear it, but also make it fairly simplistic in design, again, like the cover art. One of the things that bothered me a bit about the Thief 1 inspired outfit is also little things that made him look a little more elaborate and less simplistic, like the chainmail on his arms instead of regular sleeves. That being said though, I do think John P did a good job with it in terms of trying to achieve Garrett's look in some of TDP's cutscenes, with the exception of the brightness.
I always felt that the cover art showed blue highlights in Garrett's clothing to show more of the impressions and wrinkles in it. This would be similar to say, a comic book style of doing black clothing, since using jet black wouldn't really be too visible for detail. I believe this is why Spider-Man in the older comics was meant to be black and red, even though there were blue highlights in his black clothing. However, I do think it's fair judgement to say it might be dark blue, because realistically that might hide a person in shadows a little better than straight black. As a matter of fact, I did experiment with dark blue a little bit before I went back to black, so it wouldn't be too hard for me to do it if I wanted to.
I'll play around with the colors a bit and see if you like the dark blue look better, however I won't entirely abandon this design.
Edit: Okay here's the same thing in dark blue. Because of the game's engine though, the clothing still looks dark gray under a flame. Better?

That's actually not that bad of a visual mod, OP. I'd personally go with a slightly less darker shade, but it's still fine with me. It's nice to see Garrett having some other skins to choose from, outside of his default ones and the ones from the TDS enhancement pack made several years back.

I don't think Garrett should ever had black suit. Dark grey is less visible in shadows than plain black. Good work, though:)

can anyone still do this?

Apologies for the necro, but I figured I'd post a picture to show how the latest version looked, last I edited it. I never posted it up, as I had completely forgotten my password, and where this topic was located. If anyone wants the texture, I'll upload it.
Picture for reference:

That's better, if for nothing else than the size of the image. The other ones are so small that I can't make any details out, and the clothing ended up just looking black with no distinguishable features.
