I just bought ZZ Top's remastered Tres Hombres, and it sounds amazing.
LOVE Zappa, and Steely Dan, if they count... Jeff Beck too. Zappa's One Size Fits All and SD's Aja are my two favourite records.
Otherwise, it's good in small doses. James Gang will always be among my favourites, though.

Steely Dan's Aja is fantastic - I got it on red vinyl, and love listening to it.
The only Zappa albums I got right now are: Apostrophe', You Are What You Is, and Just Another Band From LA - though I have heard at least half of his massive catalogue.
Jeff Beck is the greatest guitar player of all time - everything from his days with the Yardbirds, to the first few Jeff Beck Groups and Beck Bogert Appice, to his Jazz Fusion stuff (Blow By Blow, Wired), to his 80s stuff, and his new stuff is all worth listening to!!!

Every musician I know is, in one way or another, a product of the music that came before... including Classic Rock, Jazz, Big Band, Classical,
Early Rap, Metal, Industrial, Folk, "Country and Western", etc.
DING DING DING! Obligatory 'Oh I LOVE rap. Just the early stuff though, NONE OF THIS MODERN GLORIFIED VIOLENT COMMERCIAL STUFF, they ain't keeping it fresh!!'
"true musician"s viewpoint.
says me with my streetsounds compilations
Anyway yeah classic rock!
I LIKE TO ROOOOCCK
ROOOOOOCCKKKKK
I LIKKEE TO ROOOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCKKK
ROOOOCCCCCCKKKKK
*solo*
And so you see classic rock is a genre
by definition that is totally un-formulaic, and is the only TRUE un-formulaic genre! None of this 'OTHER GENRES' nonsense! They're the formulaic ones! With different TAXONOMIES of sounds, time signatures, rhythms, lyrical conventions blah fucking blah to show "similarites", CUH. If you define the classic rock genre as
anything made between 1960 and 1980 with guitars then you'll see!

since when is Jimi Hendrix formulaic, since when is Rush formulaic, since when is Frank Zappa formulaic - Classic Rock is the widest genre - its crap like punk (the Clash not included in that statement, as they are cool), and rap that are boring and formulaic.
Yes, Classic Rock is wide and doesn't have to be formulaic (Although lets face it, some of it can be) - but surely Punk is wide ranging enough not to be considered formulaic? You get the original punk of just shouting at the mic (The Sex Pistols), but you also get the likes of the Clash and the Libertines. The last thing I'd call any of them is formulaic, it's pretty much the opposite imho. Unless you want to argue that they're not really punk, but I guess that's a different issue.
Back to classic rock, I never
loved it, and I didn't like the heavier stuff. It just seemed a little bloated. But I can appreciate them - they're just not quite my tastes.

I'd just like to say that Frank Zappa is definitely not in the 'classic rock' genre.

most purely fun gig I can think of is playing guitar in a "classic rock" band; including AC/DC. I think I can play rhythm guitar well enough for AC/DC. :)
Its not as fun as it sounds, at least not after the umpteenth time, but it sure beats a data entry job.

It depends on the punk (I have yet to check out The Libertines - but I have heard good things). Classic punk was a genre unto its own (despite lots of it being sped-up blues riffs), new/pop punk however is very formulaic - right down to the local scene.

Zappa breached all genres - you've got your soul inspired albums like Apostrophe', your rock inspired albums like Overnight Sensation, jazz-fusion albums like Hot Rats, rock operas like Joe's Garage and Thing Fish, composed classical music, the bicycle, comedy sketch music, etc. Hell, he even did a few rap songs that I know of (the one on Broadway the Hardway is quite good - it is early style rap though, which is always fun to listen to, for what ever reason).

Noid, brother, you feeling OK?
I've listened to your stuff (Mira, Arturus, etc) and liked it. I name it "well done" and can appreciate what's there and why. I would not
think to call it boring or formulaic, but it's not neccessarily what I would produce myself.
Well for a start I admit my music is pretty generic ambient (but don't tell anyone that, I enjoy making it)

Fucking listen to you. You're saying that classic rock is the "widest genre", and at the same time you're completely giving punk and rap the cold shoulder. That in itself invalidates your argument. Fucking state of you, honestly.
AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway.
Jimi isn't formulaic, he's the bedrock of modern guitar playing, a link between the old styles and the new and I respect him for that. Unfortunately he's had exactly 9 million and fourty seven fucking ripoffs follow in his wake, all under the banner of motherfucking CLASSIC ROCK. That fucking shit your old man listens to as he cruises down the highway to check into a private clinic to get his fucking balls inspected. Fuck you. Rush have long long LONG outstayed their welcome, never really making anything of any merit although naturally I guess you could call them fun if you can cut through all the fucking CHEESE. Check this out:
"Tobes of Hades, lit by flickering torchlight
The netherworld is gathered in the glare
Prince By-Tor takes the cavern to the north light
The sign of Eth is rising in the air."
That's Rush. This is also Rush:
"Oh, sweet miracle
Love's sweet miracle
Oh, sweet miracle
Of life
I wasn't praying for magic
I was hiding in plain sight
Rising up from the surface
To fly into the light"
DEAR FUCKING CHRIST HAVE YOU ANY IDEA
I don't even want to start on Zappa. Man couldn't a) Ever understand the meaning of quality control and b) dear god just stop writing "funny" songs
bitchin guitarist tho
It's just fucking ROCK AND ROLL, I fucking can't stand it, it's all bullshit. It's music you listen to when you're fucking pissed and/or up for a laugh and that's it. SHIT even the cunts who tried to take it seriously failed MAHAVISHU ORCHEkjlasdkls FUCK OFF
Having said that there is one band who ruled in the era of "classic rock" and that was King Crimson

Chill out man, reading that post was like reading something written by a hyperactive kid on coke.
Rap and punk both have their good points (mainly the originaters of each genre - and as for now, you have to look past the mainstream like with any other genre to get to the good stuff) - and like all other genre's (including classic rock) their ripoffs and wannabe's.
Rock and roll is about having the right to make a statement, the right to showcase artistic integrity, and the right to fuckin do whatever you want.
It really seems like you're the one of the "cunts who's tried to take it seriously", I mean if its upsetting you that much.
Cheers,
