Wow, so young. He was a pretty inventive bloke. Probably will be more influential than most are likely to know. There's a few people already saying that Gaspar Noe's newy Enter the Void owes an awful lot to Paprika, even though EtV will be more famous and celebrated.

:(
All his movies+the Paranoia Agent series sitting on a shelf right next to me, and I just convinced my mom to see Millennium Actress a few days ago... will take on an entirely new significance now.

I wasn't all that keen on Perfect Blue but liked Tokyo Godfathers a lot. Definitely a talented guy and a loss for the medium.

Damn. :( Paprika was one of about five anime films I not just enjoyed, but loved. Rest in peace.

What the fuck? What did he die of? Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue are my go-to films to lend to people to prove that anime can be as good as normal films. I was looking forward to whatever he was going to do next, still got paprika on my shelf waiting for a rainy day. Damn. He was a genius.

The title will be Yume-Miru Kikai. In English, it will be The Dream Machine. On the surface, it's going to be a fantasy-adventure targeted at younger audiences. However, it will also be a film that people who have seen our films up to this point will be able to enjoy. So it will be an adventure that even older audiences can appreciate. There will be no human characters in the film; only robots. It'll be like a "road movie" for robots.
Seemed as creative as ever... wonder if the studio decide to finish it.

If he started working on it in 2008, one imagines that Yumi-Miru Kikai is basically content-complete as far as design/script/etc, and it's just the production that needs finishing. At least, that's what I hope.
I still haven't seen Perfect Blue because I can't get ANYONE to agree to watch it with me (stupid anime stigma!) but I throughly enjoyed Paprika and legit adore Millenium Actress. Paranoia Agent is easily one of my favorite TV shows, and I pray for its re-release so that one can get a legit copy for less than $80.

I didn't think too much of Perfect Blue. As a thriller it was just okay and unlike his later films he didn't do much with the fact he could do anything in anime. Millenium Actress is easily my favourite of his works.

Perfect Blue was originally going to be live action, which may explain why it's relatively straightforward. I think they couldn't get the money or something, so they went animated instead. Still really good though, very hitchcock, although it probably would seem a lot more standard if it was a live action film. BTW when can we just call anime animation? It's like calling french food 'cuisine', i.e. retarded.
PS Aerothorn - dunno if its weird in the US (are you back over now?) but PA is readily available on UK amazon for bargain: (
