Did anyone ever figure out what the cause of his sudden political shift was?

Have they brought the damn dirty apes in for questioning?

He will be waiting for you on the other side, with soylent cakes, his gun, a racing chariot and a whole planet of dirty apes throwing stone tablets at you.
What a mess.

I've always had the same amount of respect for Charleton Heston as an actor and a person as I have had utter disdain for his acting and his politics. If that makes sense.
One less dinosaur on the planet, but my goodness wasn't he a glorious dinosaur?

Ah, this is indeed sad, but not entirely unexpected.
The death of Heston, and the puns that have sprung up in this thread before I could get one in.
The Omega Man just got bumped up a few places in my Netflix queue.

Exactly. He was an enjoyable paradox. His position on guns made me nervous, but the guy marched with Martin Luther King Jr. My first 'epic' movie as a kid was Ben Hur which caused me to fall in love with both Roman History and first century religions. He wasn't afraid to lampoon himself, his politics, or his career (see his walk-on in one of the early "Friends" episodes), and seemed to genuinely care for the people he worked with.

Since I've never watched Soylent Green, having only seen clips and heard/read reactions and cultural references, I'm watching it right now!

Hail and farewell to a great actor, and an even greater man.
“So that this nation may long endure, I urge you to follow in the hallowed footsteps of the great disobedience of history that freed exiles, founded religions, defeated tyrants, and yes, in the hands of an aroused rabble in arms and a few great men.”
Charleton Heston
