I'm buying a new bottle on the way home tonight now that I've got myself all worked up.

I eagerly await the day that my palette comes around to appreciating fine spirits, right now I just can't handle anything over 20%. The process of makings scotch fascinates me though.

the only ones on your list I have tried are the Glenfiddich and Glenlivet(12yo), both awesome.

Speysides are for nancies. Tastes like drinking butter. Talisker, Laphroig and Caol Ila - those are drinks for a man.
Maybe a fair point about the palate-blasting effect though.

Also I must protest that for the die-hard Raiders fan my t-shirt only serves as a painful reminder of the downfall of the once brilliant Marcus Brody at the hands of the insufferable and childish Last Crusade.

Also, sign me up for the taste tour. I'm extremely ignorant about this stuff.

All the way with Scots, most people don't like the medicinals till their palette's broken in.
For me, a Balvenie, but if you're going to drink a blend, then I would suggest a whiskey instead.
Malts, yup, here in Scotland can't beat 'em but for a bog standard of the shelf bottle, Jamesons and Bushmills stand head and shoulders above your Bell's and the like.
If anyone gets a chance, go to The Whisky Society. Single cask, cask strength from around 120 distilleries.

Yeah, Jamesons kicks arse - triple distillation for the silky finish!
Chivas Regal ain't bad as blends go either.
