Nice knives, pity about the Laphroaig and Kyle Reese sneakers.

I bought my dad a Global knife for christmas, and thanks to its superior edge I could see parts of the inside of a pineapple that I swear I never saw before.

Scots, what high-flying fancy world do you live in when laphroaig is a poor choice?!
I dont think I could afford to drink with you:(

Heh. It has nothing to do with being a poor man's choice but rather due to the fact that it is an Islay whisky and everything to do with it being a big bottle of peaty suck.
As a scotch enthusiast, I always recommend steering newcomers well clear of almost all Islay/Skye malts until you've settled with the cleaner and sweeter palate of the Speyside and North Highland malts.
My first ever whisky was a Laphroaig and it nearly put me off whisky for good, I didn't try another for a few months. It is simply overpowering. In my opinion, stay away from the Laphroaigs, Bowmores and Caol Islas until you've tried a few milder whiskies. As even the Laphroaig ad put it: "love it or hate it". Personally, I hate it.
I'm a huge Speyside Malt enthusiast, so I've tried a lot of them, but at a time I've owned bottles of the folllowing.
Entry level single malt:
Isle of Jura 10 yo
Glenfiddich 12 yo (special reserve)
Glenmorangie 10 yo
Glenlivet 12 yo
Once you find your feet:
Balvenie 12 yo (Double wood)
Glenfiddich 15 yo (Solera range)
Glengoyne 10 yo
The Macallan 12 yo
Any older Glenlivet
Cask strength whiskies
Excellent scotch:
Glenfiddich 21 yo (Havana range)
Glengoyne 17 yo and above
Any Macallan with a scary price tag
The other great thing about the Speysides is that you can do a relatively sequential tastings without losing coherence of the flavours. Throw one Islay in there and you'll taste none of the subtleties of the Speysides as you feel like you're sucking on a lump of coal for the rest of the evening.
The reason I recommend Glenfiddichs across the board is twofold, one I have a weakness for them after visiting their wonderful distillery and sampling more than I rightly should have, and because they are entry-level for price range across all the differing qualities of whiskies out there. Not just that, they have a high quality process and therefore as you progress through their whiskies, you'll get a real appreciation of the complexity that can be developed in the varying maturation processes.

Fuck, it's called a joke you useless idiots. DO I REALLY NEED WINKIES LOWER CASE AND AN EXCLAMATION MARK POST NOTIFIER TO SIGNAL THESE THINGS.
