Those two groups have been wrong on so many things over their lifetime. I don't really see that as much of an endorsement.

I'm not saying it's a good film--I haven't seen it--you really can't be that surprised that people like things that people like.
Also: the adoring critics and pleased crowd also have one up on you in that they aren't basing their opinion off trailers and wikipedia perving.

Seeing lots of '08 releases in this thread, I guess that qualifies my comment about late year release schedules.
I also saw Benjamin Button this year. Technically superb movie and beautiful to watch, but totally empty and pointless.
And The Box didn't do anything for you, Dave? I'd heard mixed reviews.

I'll give you W, but the rest seem to be early 2009 releases in the UK.
W popped up because I used the IMDB UK release date list to remember what I'd seen and the DVD was released in March.

I'm holding off on making my end of year list until I've seen Avatar and figured out where it falls on the Good/Bland/Ugly/Transformers 2 scale, which I'll probably do this weekend.
At least it'll be easier than putting together the best of the decade list.
