If you try to scan the book you'll be risking serious damage to it. I've tried scanning one of mine more than once, but I always give up.

Aye and I did just that, I tried to scan it page by page in a flatbed scanner (BIG mistake) and the damn spine came loose or something. So I sold it on ebay...wish I hadn't now!

I know, that's been my primary problem with it. I think that if I'm careful I could scan the text from the page without completely flattening the page out, but I'm not sure if that will show up well on-screen.

Do you think a hand-held scanner would yield better results?
I mean, I feel that with certain scanning/OCR suites, one might work wonders puzzling together the pieces.

I have four copies of SS1. Two original, two EA reprint. (which by the way, were being sold for $1.99 on the EA rotating jewel-case rack at EB a few years back)
I have three copies of SS2. One original, and two of the double-pack from Games Warehouse from a year or two ago.
I actually just installed one of each, patched them up the way I like them, and then zipped up the installed folders. These are what I use to play the games, and the actual CDs just stay in their cases, inside another case, inside a closet.

What the hell, man? Once the spine gave way, you should have just gone ahead and detached every page for perfect scanning.
