this has anything to do with studio gear?
My point is that he spends years searching for the perfect acoustic guitar sound and then doesn't even really do his own talent justice with it; that the constant pursuit of perfection via new gear can, or has the potential to, distract you from other considerations. I think this is more of a problem when you're doing everything yourself - you can put so much energy into imitating the sound of a professional recording (because you have to compete, right?) whilst working with material that, at heart, you know isn't really up to scratch to begin with.
Anyway, I'll try not to make this about me. Just sharing an observation and an experience.

you have a point, I also have known people who use gear as a procrastination tool for actually getting anything done. "I have to learn to use item x and y before I can begin my masterpiece!", and the cycle continues with the next piece of gear etc.
also bob you should really try audition, even the demo, I find it more powerful and easier to use than goldwave.

yeah sometimes people get carried away with one aspect of what they're doing a little too much. This gear isn't the best, but I'm doing digital recording so how much difference is it going to make? I'm not producing the next kelly clarkson album so I'm not too worried about it. Mostly the idea here is to get something workable that can be used for recording in any situation. I'm not terribly trusting of laptops, and that's why I'm rackmounting my computer. I dont actually know anybody who does this and there are a lot of people at school who think I'm nuts for not simply buying a mac book. I'm not one to say that macs suck.. but i'm a windows guy and who the hell cares what OS i'm using so long as the final product is good quality. (i've found it works both ways, I used macs all through high school, and now at university everything is mac as well, but lots of Mac users say they can't trust windows because they can't rely on it's stability or lack thereof, that's like a windows user saying that Macs aren't for power users. It goes both ways in both situations) So I'm sure I'm going to get a bit of flak from some people at school for my gear choices, but I don't care. I chose Cubase because I'm familiar with it, we used it for recording the band last spring. the KRK's sound awesome. I fired them up tonight to listen to some (
http://www.ashesdivide.com/) Ashes Divide and the NeoTokyo OST and it sounds awesome. Plenty of bass w/o a subwoofer.
Mostly what I'm going to be doing is recording my band over again. If you remember the last recordings I put up they weren't all that spectacular (I thought they were great for a couple of people who had 0 experience going into it). Unfortunately the band isn't playing anymore. I had school starting last September and our singer is pregnant (she's 8 montths now) so it was a good time to take a break. It'll probably be indefinate, but we'll get our music recorded properly before we disband forever if that's what happens.
Also I'll be using it to record my wife's band (which i'm also in). right now we're talking to a guy at Sony trying to figure out how get places. We're pretty sure nothing is going to happen but we've got some good pop/rock stuff that her voice is really suited to. Barring getting anything done for ourselves, we're open to selling the songs if somebody who is actually famous and making money hears them and likes them. Website: (
http://www.kelliane.com) Kelliane Its a little embarassing playing these awful pop tunes, but to be honest I get paid for it, I get to play my guitar. And I usually use the hardest and most saturated guitar distortion I can get to add a fun edge to it. It gets people excited.
And then... basically its just for whatever little projects start up. I hope to do some video game stuff. SFX and Music. We'll see if anybody starting up a mod is interested. I'm also working on my own game, and taking computer science classes along side my Digital Audio stuff.
I think this'll be a great setup.

OnionBob, I like it. Up Periscope is lush. Samantha Smith... and the beats in Paternoster. Nice.
What ever happened to Noid's musical foray? I still listen to some of his stuff. It had an... interesting flavour. Tintagel Ruins, that is a track.

im experimenting with a few different things at the moment because i want to up the 'finishing' quality of my stuff so i'll check out audition. its hard to beat buzz though, it's such a unique way to work. i cant imagine how id make those sounds in any other program. i cant do anything at the moment though because i have a perforated ear drum.
