Money and power be some funny shit in a horrible sort of way. Could any amount make you sanction pouring acid down someones throat? Methinks the demons are running the church. Thank heaven we don't have any here taking advantage of the most vulnerable and raping children and the like.

It's been a few years since I've had this rant here - in fact I think it was in a Starrfall thread then as well.
More than half of the posts here are using the word "Africa" to describe a certain circumstance or situation. The article was about Nigeria and yet uses "Africa" as an umbrella term.
Once again I say that Africa is a Continent. A very, very large Continent made up of 54 unique and sovereign Countries that all have diverse religions, laws and problems. Some are not Christian except in a very small minority and in some the tribal system is a very effective form of governance.
Here are some graphics to put it in perspective.
Lookit all the different Countries. Ooh colourful.

Ok, "Africans in villages" is just a (bad) shorthand for people growing up in poverty-stricken regions rife with superstition and no outlets to break out of that world-view; their worldview will give them a pass on cruelty if it isn't checked.
Sounds worldwide to me, and yeh it seems to be more widespread in "Africa", but you want to try some of the housing schemes in central belt Scotland.

I was keen to reply, but I'll miss the last giraffe back to my village. And then the lions will eat me.

To be fair, it seems like a lot of Africans refer to "Africa" as well. That's one of the things I like about that mindset, it is much less nationalist than the western world.
When I got off the plane in Tanzania our guide greeted us with "Welcome to Africa." Not "Tanzania". Could you imagine a Frenchman saying "Welcome to Europe"?
Making generalised statements about "Africa" is not just reserved for ignorant westerners. The "African people" seem very proud to consider themselves as a continent rather than a collection of competing nations. (
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/george_ayittey_on_cheetahs_vs_hippos.html) Another example.
At least, that has been my experience. Maybe I'm the ignorant westerner.

Or, for that matter, "Welcome to France". :p

The same could be said about Christianity, or any other religion for that matter.
Saying "Africa" is kind of the same as saying "THE church". when somebody says the church I ususally think of "THE pope" or "THE catholic church" since its the biggest of the bunch. That's in my mind anyway and I get the feeling in this thread that "THE church" means Christians for a lot of people posting, and thats a pretty big generalisation. It really sucks that it's events like this that put the christian faith in the minds of people. It's true that there are some real bastards out there doing horrific things, and not just a few of them, in the name of the christian faith. But the fact is that for every person you hear about doing these awful things, there are at least a million people going about their everyday lives that are hard working, level headed people that aren't psychopaths. And these people make up most of the population. Just like the Taliban / bin laden doesn't speak for all of the Musilm world, and yet some think they speak for all the Arab world, which is even larger.
Not that i'm trying to run off on a tangent here, and I don't think this thread is heading this direction at all, but I'm really sick of hearing that a politically conservative minded individual, who is a christian, has his/her head in the crusades / hates gay people / supports global warming / believes in exorcism (the kind on TV we're talking about in the other thread) / beats their wives / ... you get my point right? It is possible to have a level headed person who is a christian, the fact that you never hear about them is because they make up the majority of people in that category and they're ordinary people. So make sure you're blaming the bastards that are doing the evil, and not the enormous general over-arching concept that they claim to be supporting, and getting wrong anyway.
