Eloquently put.

Parents need to do their part, that's for damned sure. They're supposed to be guiding their children into adulthood, so they will have the skills to deal with life. How to read a book and understand context and theme should be one of many skills. The bible needs critical thinking to grasp properly. It's called a "sword" for a reason. It's often mishandled by clods trained by clods. There are far too many amateurs cutting people down.
I would have once believed that the reason people believe in any religion is because when they are young, people convince them it is true. For the most part it is parents or school teachers in my case, that taught religion, but whose to say they are right? Because some book says so? There is a book that says scientology is right too. Maybe I just can't understand that things aren't as black and white as right is wrong. There are books that teach about cosmological theories that are just as speculative as anything the major religions of the world have and children are learning about this bullshit before they can even concieve of why it might be wrong. I learned about the ozone layer back when I was kid, tell me that wasn't brainwashing. At least not that it is being depleted and apparently science doesn't much either. At least its not the hot ohman the world is ending button anymore.
But then this doesn't explain born-again people of any faith who decide later on in life to give up their current lifestyle and embrace religion.

Heh, I'd like to hear Stephen Russell reinterpret Tocky's line as Benny.
One of my aunts didn't teach her children what to believe, and let them decide for themselves. Well, I know this is probably an isolated case, but one believes in reincarnation and one embraces communism and got himself a red star tattoo.:D
:p

That's the best way. Let them decide for themselves.
Think of brainwashing. Now apply it over the course of 18 or so years, with the subject having no reason to doubt that the statements are true, and coming from a figure the subject loves and trusts utterly. You could make anyone believe anything under those conditions.

Children believe it because it gets put into their head from an early age. Of course, that doesn't
always work. Luckily my parents, despite being Christian, didn't teach me any of that at home so I only had to deal with it during school assembly (singing hyms, eugh).
Adults believe it because it presents a nice idea that they don't have to die, and that relatives aren't "really" dead. It's
nice to think there's some magic man looking out for you. If you ever hear when (
http://www.wayofthemaster.com/) Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort speak, they constantly refer to being able to give believers "eternal life". Rather than people accepting the reality that everyone dies. Probably why you get "born again" people - they are worried about death and probably want to make sure.
Of coures then there's also succeptable adults that just want some meaning in their life, so they fall for people like the two idiots mentioned before that love to "share their faith" (i.e. force it on people). Some people just need to belong to something, and especially if you've ever seen some of these super-church evangelical things - religion fits into that very easily.

That's a very convenient way of evading the Bible as a book of history. It would be naive to say that the things told in the Bible never took place, since most of them have been proven archeologically. And since you're going into such personal things as calling two people idiots without any good reason other than it just felt good, you're not exactly unbiased.
Most or some christians believe because they search without expecting anything or having any prejudice. And what can be found in the Bible is pretty convincing, once you're observing and being honest about what you see. It's very easy to give control to your feelings and start flinging all kinds of insults without actually doing the hard part, which is honest thinking.

Good point Qooper - the historic veracity and fulfilled prophecy played a major role in my decision to become a christian years ago and though I no longer consider myself such, I have great respect for the bible as a book of history - it gets far less credit than it deserves in that sense. It's record of historic events is usually dead on - even excepting the miraculous - and has been found amazingly accurate in it's detail, to the point that it almost convinces me that it was written by an objective third party who spans time and distance. Quite a fascinating book to say the least.

I tend to view religious debates as a way of being pretentious without embarrassment.
