Oh well christ I basically never email a friend or relative when I can phone them instead. That's just polite.
But if I'm, say, making a non-urgent inquiry, arranging a gig, or something that is more useful written down and done at the leisure of the person on the other end, email is good.
Seconded.

I'd far rather send an email than speak on the telephone, or even face to face in many cases. I'm not a horribly unsocial person or desperate shut-in or anything - in fact, put a few beers in me and you'll probably start wishing I'd shut the fuck up - but I was very shy when I was young so I attribute to a bit of a childhood remnant that won't let go. I know a number of people who dislike using the phone for various reasons, most of which probably either have been or will be mentioned in this thread, so I'd tend to agree with everyone else - some folks just don't like phones. Including you, apparently.

Just out of interest, here's an (
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200303/rauch?r) article on introverts that I think is rather apropos given some of the responses here. Not that I really understand any of you fucking weirdos, I love talking to people and am more extroverted than Elton John.

Wow! No wonder there was so much man love in SF!

I think I'll pass but thanks for offering.

I don't offer, I make demands. Here's the tutu. Get dancing, bitch.

Only if you have plenty of cash to shove down my g-string.

the back and forth, brilliant
i don't much like the phone either, but especially when I'm expecting a call from stranger. I'd much rather talk in person.

And that just makes sense. But what I'm saying is: When it comes to something like, say, technical support, I'd rather sit on hold for twenty minutes waiting for a guy in India to answer the phone so that he can ask me if I've tried turning the computer off and back on again than send a support ticket by email and then get on with my day.
I just don't use email. 98% of the emails I do get are either from the Sound Design mailing list (which I only read), or they're ToDo List update notifications from my work.
