I disagree. They are a branch off the same limb so I don't think anthropomorphic can apply. Is it so out of the realm of primate behavior to start ritual without words? Ritual doesn't have to apply to religion. It can just be a comforting thing to do when there is free time and nothing to apply it to. When we were kids we would walk the roads out of boredom. One day one of us started kicking a can. Soon we were all doing it without a word being said. We cleaned out every ditch for miles. Eventually we called it herding cans but it started and continued without words because with that racket there could be none. It doesn't take abstract reasoning to do mindless ritual.
That or they are hoarding them in case they ever figure out how to make a slingshot.
