This is what sets the disaster at Chernobyl apart from all others - its insidiously deceptive. Animals are present, the sky is blue and rivers flow just as they always have. It all looks so benign and serene.

In NOVA episode from 1989, "Back to Chernobyl", they run around with the radiation meter around the reactor and it is explicitly stated several times that while higher than normal, the area is to be considered safe. And that was 19 years ago.
Take it easy. Popular science programs are excessively simplifying. I think it's time to post the Caesium-137 contamination map AGAIN, so that people will understand why it's not safe to permanently live in some areas :

Sorry, but I trust NOVA completely.
I'm moving to Chernobyl to prove you wrong

Expecially cool would be if you did one of those "same pic of me everyday for five years" deals.
THEN we'd be able to tell if something is sneaking up on you...
:laff:

Yeh I saw a news report on this on television, and was amazed at how close to reality STALKER had got it.

There's a few seeds on torrents around the place for that one too. It's cool.
There's a more recent Horizon ep called 'Nuclear Nightmares' which is really cool too. Someone might have mentioned it before. It has a woman who was preagnant at the time of the evacuation going back to visit her old flat in Pripyat with her daughter (18yrs when it was made). The mother was strongly encouraged to abort because of the radiation, but her daughter is fine so far.
Most of the doco puts the case that we are entirely too superstitious about radiation.
(a lot of these stories kinda take the mystical quality out of the Zone a bit. I always wonder if kidofspeed would have created such a fuss if we outsiders weren't so fascinated by its forbidden spookiness. She probably got ignored as a bit of a crank in Ukraine)
