That's a bit of a silly comparison since it requires a prospective study to conclusively prove smoking causes cancer whereas the one you're talking about was done in a few weeks not decades. Having said that I think it was because of ethical issues that we didn't use the work done by the Nazis on smoking and cancer - I was in an ethics lecture and apparently the Nazis banned pictures of smoking with people in uniform.

I've only lived in two areas of England for any length of time: Yeovil and Bristol. Never had any problem with gangs of/or chavs myself.
That idea of a Blade-esque vigilante group seems like a pretty good one, aside from the obvious problems.
"You shouldn't take the law into your own hands." But if the law enforcement agencies can't or won't, who should? IMO the law should be in the hands of those it's supposed to protect.

Well, officially at least. And I know there has been no action, where I live, in the last 6 years or so.

If I recall the most notorious gang in New Yorks's history were the Dead Rabbits.
The Bowery Boys were a much bigger, and more notorious, gang. "Dead Rabbit" is an angloization of a gaelic term for tough guy that happened to wind up in "Gangs of New York", much of the old-timey lingo for which came from plays from that era, which were about the Bowery Boys.

Would you believe that down here in deepest darkest Cornwall, we are getting real problems with a particular bunch of "chavs" altho' we don't call 'em that, they would probably like it! It got so bad last week that there was a running fight thro' the beach front car park on to the beach and then down through the village, resulting in 2 police cars 1 police "meat wagon" and 2 ambulances attending the scene! The whole area cleared of holiday makers in 10 minutes flat, not what this small village that relies on holiday trade needs.
As some of you know, I am involved with the local parish council here and this type of behaviour has led us to apply for a (

Dark times indeed in deepest darkest Cornwall.

The book is a lot better than the film.
There's also an excellent book by Luc Sante, Low Life, about the early NY. Well worth a read.

I doubt your childrens' diet is significantly worse than ours (I'm willing to bet our school lunch programs are worse) and we don't have a bunch of anti-social rejects. Just a lot of fatties.
I'd be more willing to accept some kind of social cause than mere diet. That sounds way too simplistic and I'm not aware of any direct correlations between poor diet and criminal behavior.

Exactly. You ideas are far to simple SD. Jamies dinners?!! Who cares.
The social problems in this country are due to culture and circumstances.
Quote Posted by Strontium Dog
If I was saying that it was diet alone, then obviously that's being simplistic. It is one of a number of factors.
FINALLY I am vindicated :D
Conclusive and incontrovertible proof that poor diet is partly responsible for criminal behaviour: (

[N]ew research calls into question the very basis of criminal justice and the notion of culpability. It suggests that individuals may not always be responsible for their aggression. Taken together with a study in a high-security prison for young offenders in the UK, it shows that violent behaviour may be attributable at least in part to nutritional deficiencies.
The UK prison trial at Aylesbury jail showed that
when young men there were fed multivitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, the number of violent offences they committed in the prison fell by 37%.

They even use much the same wording I did when I was ridiculed in this thread about poor diet being one of a number of factors rather than the only one.
Quote Posted by article
Although no one is suggesting that poor diet alone can account for complex social problems, the former chief inspector of prisons Lord Ramsbotham says that he is now "absolutely convinced that there is a direct link between diet and antisocial behaviour, both that bad diet causes bad behaviour and that good diet prevents it."
