In an era of Netflix glut and endless Marvel spinoffs, there’s the question of how much quality still matters to studio heads or the viewing public. I spoke to one VFX artist and technologist who advises studios on how to incorporate AI into their workflows. He asked to remain anonymous because, as he put it, “most of the stuff I’m doing is locked in NDAs.” Lately, he said, when a director asked for a small element — a swirl of smoke or a spark of flame — he would create it using generative AI. It didn’t look as good as it would have if he’d used traditional VFX software like Houdini or Maya, but he didn’t think most people would notice the difference. “Oh, there’s quality lost,” he said. “But that’s only lost on the people who appreciate it, like fine wine.”

In this OpenAI is training chain-of-thought models and one thing they looked at is the chain of thought where the AI admitted that it would be easier to cheat, and thought of ways to cheat on the metric, so they built another AI to detect when the model was doing that, and would penalize it. However, this didn't make the AI less likely to cheat: it made it less likely to write it down that it's cheating in plain English.

The analogy they give here is about a teenager caught going to a party because they wrote about it in their diary, and their parents read their diary. There's a small probability the kid will be less likely to sneak out to parties, but a much larger probability that they'll simply stop writing things down in their diary, or be more subtle with it. The suspicion is that the AI is still communicating its intentions to itself, but it just learned to be less obvious in how it stated that information, or to internalize the cheating without writing it down.
