Alchemy can do most of the useful things Illusion can and it won't cost 5 million Magicka to achieve it. Then again, you could have made a worse choice.
Like picking Mysticism.

That's not funny :(
(I'm going to go try to find the console command to pick new stuff over again...)

For those that are afraid of the high level monsters that I dominate easily, keep in mind that even if you are ready to level, you can avoid doing so by simply not sleeping. You need to sleep once for a mage quest, another time for the DB start, and as far as I remember, that's it.
With the changes to the sleep/wait system from Morrowind, you really don't need to sleep. Even with those exceptions you're still looking at a level 2-3 character. A much better solution than making your skills level up hella slower.
Case in point, Tuco is level 46, and has probably slept around 50 times.

Wait, I must have missed this part of the discussion - why is being high level a bad thing?
Also, yeah, sucks you can't re-pick major skills. Bleh.

The mobs level with you, so the game world gets harder as you get higher level.
RyushiBlade on 3/4/2006 at 02:53
Right now I've probably got around 8 levels lined up. I'm on the brink right now - two more levels and a whole new wave of tougher, meaner monsters show up. So I'm taking my time fighting the monsters I have tactics against right now, and will probably level up in a couple of days.

The mechanics of Oblivion don't become necesarily easy for people who aren't exploting(postponing your levels, intentionally choosing 'major' skills that you neve use is exploiting, sorry), for the most part, until you use umbra and a sword with +40 fire damage, or get a shitload of magicka and 100 willpower and start busting out the 300 or 900 damage spells.
Some of the fights I had with Tuco were challenging enough to be enjoyable, so I imagine a normal person would have trouble with it. But once you bust out the daedric longsword with 40 fire damage, and the 900dmg spells, it becomes as easy as morrowind.

I was actually going to ask you about the combat at higher levels as compared to Morrowind. Thanks, Tuco. With my level as it is right now, I still come across a lot of challenging fights, particularly when I'm fighting multiple opponents. Especially if they're Clannfears.

It's sad that at the level I play at, the cool blocking system is more or less replaced by similar methods as you and I saw in morrowind. Right now there's no reason for me to block because, even if I get hit or get blocked and don't do full damage, I don't take much damage and still deal 40pts of fire damage, which is sadly around the same as a fully powered swing. So I just circle strafe and swing quickly. Because I deal half or more of my damage from my enchant, and the shield can be useful sometimes(to lessen number of knockdowns mostly), I haven't really had a two hander I've equipped in a while. Though I'm sure if I restarted and had a melee character I would still level up with a one hander/two hander duo(though I'd actually go and scoop Umbra first thing, but that's just an anomally in the game).
If I want to, I can take away around half(except bretons and Xivialvi) of any mob I fight's health(and all in many cases) with a spell that costs less than a 4th of my real mana.
If I really feel nasty, my mana pool is capable of doing 1,000 damage. I've never fought a mob that would withstand that.
