Hopefully won't be a problem for me, I'm planning on doing the same as in Morrowind - questing hero good with swords and medium armour, who robs everyone blind :sly:
Blade
Security
Sneak
Medium Armor
Marksman
Athletics
Block

No Medium Armor skill in Oblivion, have to chose between Light and Heavy if you want an armor skill.

I knew there'd be a hitch in my uninformed decisions :p It actually makes a lot of sense to bringing more of a challenge to the game, when you can't just go for the intermediate - it certainly makes my soldier/thief slightly harder to create.
I guess I'd go for light armour, and assume that it'll still allow me to be an effective soldier.

Before I go leaping headlong into a new character...
Aside from slowing the leveling process, will moving some major skills to minor status (I'm thinking sneak, athletics, and acrobatics here) have any other impact on the character or the game? Will it affect how high I can level? And is it possible to level using minor skills? I was under the impression that only major skills impacted leveling, but this thread on the TES forums seems to imply otherwise:

(But I must also admit that I'm not sure what the hell he's talking about at all.)

Your major skills determine when you level, but improvements to minor skills (in addition to major skills) contribute your attribute bonuses.
I think.

Minor skills will not advance your level counter, but they will count towards your attribute points at level up. You need a total of 10 Major skill increases to level up once, any beyond that will be saved for the next level.
Example:
You have Sneak as a Major skill and have it increase once. This earns you 1 point towards leveling and 1 point towards Agility increase.
Example 2:
You have Sneak as a Minor skill and have it increase once. This does not earn you anything towards leveling but you still earn 1 point towards Agility increase.
The actual increase in your attributes when you level up depend on how many points you have earned for that attribute during that level. You need 10 points to get a +5 modifier (maximum).
You maximum level depends on the starting values of your Major skills, the lower your starting skills the higher your maximum level. This is because you need to earn levels by improving your Major skills. You can bypass this limitation by going to jail and spending time as this will decrease some of your skills (randomly picked).

How about this:
Armorer
Blade
Alchemy
Destruction
Illusion
Marksman
Mercantile
The only skills out of that list that I'm really using are Blade and Marksman; the rest are more or less placeholders, skills that I may use now and then, but not nearly enough to cause me to level prematurely.
Sneak, acrobatics, etc., are all advancing as normal, but my character level is remaining low, and progress toward the next level is slow. Very slow. In fact, I'm inclined to wonder if perhaps I've gone too far the other way, and that I've stunted my level progression to the point that it's going to take me days of playing to make a single level.
With only two of the major skills actually in use, and then only in combat situations, will I be able to level at any sort of normal pace?

Mercantile will speed up your leveling if you're worried about going too slow. It will automatically be used for every item you buy or sell.

Im really faring well with my Bog standard Heavy Armor/Shield/Sword Argonian Warrior (currently Level 31)
Majors :
*Blade - Attacks gained from perks are somewhat useful (disarm or knockback are hilarious, nothing like flinging a lich around or knockin a superduper magic weapon from someones hands then nicking it, forcing them to fight you barehanded, especially in the arena were they dont pick up their weapons again), plus levels up Strength fairly fast
*Block - Raises rather slow, Journeyman perk makes your shield never degrade, kinda silly, undoubtedly useful skill tho
*Heavy Armor - Master Perk is a blast, you can practically run circles around everyone in full armor, opposed to earlier levels where you crouch like a slug. Plus : Endurance modifier = good
*Armorer - Couldnt frankly live without it, later monsters trash your armor in no time. Running back to town to repair magic stuff = ugh. Raising armor to 125 = good. Paying for repair = blah. Master perk = priceless. Also, Endurance modifier
Restoration - higher levels make your spells cost less, so its good for a knucklehead warrior with little magicka. Plus, after you maxed Strength and Endurance, the willpower modifier comes in handy. Raises slow tho
Security - raises slow but without the initial boost to 25 id probably have broken even more picks :p
Mercantile - took that coz i didnt know what else to take. Raises extremely slow, even when always haggling near the limit. Probably the reason why people think it gets stuck. It doesnt. Kinda helpful, but should have taken blunt probably so i could use all weapons effectively.
With that setup i had Endurance maxed with no time, followed by Strength. Helped around the peak of Level 12-16 were you arent really strong, but the Monsters gain thoughness (my perception)
Id advise against taking Alcemy/Speechcraft (or generally everything which doesnt help you kill stuff) as Majors. Especially Alchemy raises lighting fast if you make lotsa potions. Which you should.

Just limit the strategy to "all non-combat-improving skills go into Minor" and you'll do fine. That way you'll actually level on your ability to kill shit, which is what you want.
