Here's what I have planned for skills:
Blade
Security
Sneak
Light Armor
Alchemy
Illusion
Block
I'm currently debating whether I should drop Block for Mysticism. Is it too hard for a melee character to start without blocking?

I have found block to be extremely easy. I'm not sure you need it as a major skill, but it just depends on your preferences of play and how quick you want to level up. Other's may have experienced different things

Currently my build is a male Wood Elf, with a custom class. The main attributes are Agility and Willpower. My main skills are:
Marksman
Blade
Alchemy
Destruction
Sneak
Security
Light Armor
I am having a lot of fun just sneaking around with my bow and arrow (which is 1000 time better than it was in Morrowind) and getting 3x attack bonuses for stealth shots. I took blade because I feel that I needed some better melee ability than Destruction gives me, and I can combine the two so that my ranged and melee are both relatively high. I was thinking about taking Resoration instead of Blade, but I can always just make potions that restore health using Alchemy.

Block is a definite plus. If you don't block in combat, you're almost guaranteed death. If you're going to use it so much, you might as well make it a major skill for faster levelling up.
Also for future posters (postings?), I cannot stress the importance of Security or Alteration. There are a lot of locked chests and doors in the game. If you go for a pure combat character, you'll be unable to open a fair amount of chests.
I'd probably also recommend Restoration. I think every new character has a standard heal spell and I use it almost all the time.

I did a Khajiit thief/assassin-like custom class. It's really fun to play so far. The stealth works really well, and the thieves guild stuff is great.
Main skills:
-Blade
-Light Armor
-Marksmanship
-Acrobatics
-Sneak
-Security
-Speechcraft

I kinda got a Thor-thing going(too bad I can't have a long white beard). Nord "Storm Lord" Custom Class with
Blunt Weap
Heavy Armor
Illusion(paralize has its benefits)
Destruction(lightning spells only)
Alchemy
Athletics
Armorer
The character creation at the beginning is awesome. All the little adjustments makes it possible to make a character that looks just like yourself. I took 30 min and made 1 that looked exactly like me, then used the age modifier to see what I'd look like when I'm old and grey. To my surprise it looks almost exactly like my father. Makes me think it actually might be accurate.

Don't forget that at level 20ish security, I was able to open every pickable lock in the game. Just gotta be awesome like me.

To me, Mysticism in this game is the "don't need it" school of magic. I've found myself wishing as a mage/thief (Breton, Mage sign, Sneak/Marksman/Destruction/Restoration/Alteration/Conjuration/Mysticism) that I'd chosen either Illusion or Block. Mysticism's useful, but not very.
Conjuration, on the other hand, rocks. I just love my little pets.

I rerolled my character last night and I'm finally happy with the build I've chosen:
Blade
Block
Destruction
Illusion
Light Armour
Marksman
Mysticism
So where are Sneak, Security, and Acrobatics? They're not in my set of major skills, which means I don't need to fear levelling up when using them. I fully intend to play as a Thiefy character, but I don't want my prowess in non-combat parts of the game to affect how difficult combat will be inevitably. The key is that your skills are just as effective regardless of whether or not they're Major or Minor. My Thiefy skills start out lower than they would if they were major skills, but I don't mind a bit of grind now to save myself some hassle later on.

That crazy Ignatz, always thinking ahead.
His words of wisdom have me thinking of doing the same thing. I'm getting a bit tired of leveling up for doing nothing more than sneaking around and climbing on things. Maybe it's just coincidence, but in the last mission I played I found myself in unavoidable, close-up combat with a dude in full Dwarven armor, and let's just say that the ass that got kicked looked suspiciously like mine. I mean, it wasn't even close; the only way I got through it was to crank the difficulty slider all the way down. I don't mind challenging fights, but being hopelessly outclassed is another matter entirely.
