Some of my desktop icons have suddenly changed to ODT icons. 3 were Thief shortcuts.
So far I've deleted the IconCache.db and restarted as per one suggestion. I've tried 2 restore points. I've tried navigating to the registry but don't appear to have the relevant entries and I'm nervous of messing around in the registry anyway. And I've run a virus scan.
I've tried changing/refreshing display as per suggestion below but if I right click on my destop, I don't get 'properties' so I tried some other kind of setting through the control panel - didn't work. Right-clicking brings up AMD Vision Engine Control Center but I can't find anywhere to try this:
Quote:
"Right-click an open area of the desktop, select 'Properties.'
Click 'Settings' and change the color depth of your system to any other setting, if you are at 32 bit, change to 16 bit. Click 'Apply' and then change back to what you had before. Click OK.
Now right-click an open area of the desktop and click 'Refresh.'
The .exes themselves are the correct icon on my H drive but as soon as I do a shortcut to desktop it changes to the ODT icon. The programmes work so it's not a major deal but is a bit irritating.
I'd appreciate any easily-understood instructions for something else to try. Win7 and integrated graphics. (I can hear you muttering voodoo but my proper pc is in hospital)

Sure sounds like icon cache is borked.

IconCache.db is rewritten from memory on logoff - so, if you deleted it while logged in with the user having problems -> you get the borked icon cache right back again.
Delete under another user (or boot to command line).

Just "ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache" in any command line window (ie. start->run "cmd") should work with current user too ... worth a try.

Thank you, zombe, but a funny thing happened overnight. I've no idea what went on but in the middle of the night I found I was having trouble with Adobe Flash and after messing around trying to fix that, I noticed the icons had reverted to normal.
I don't seem to have another user but me so presumably that's why the cache deletion didn't work. At least I'll know what to try if it happens again. Many thanks.
