I'm still not sure why a Nobel laureate potentially couldn't look like Sophie Marceau, or whomever. The implication doesn't sit comfortably with me.

You have a problem with reality not with my implication. Here's a (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_laureates) list of nobel laureates.
1) Try to find the women on this list.
2) Compare to the picture of Sophie M.

Now potentially what you said is possible, but it is extremely unlikely, hence unbelievable in a movie. If she did indeed get the role, the reasoning behind that choice would be quite obvious.
Hint: It's not to show that smart women can look good.

Now let's turn the table: What is your problem with a less than perfect looking woman playing a nobel laureate in a movie, even if it's more believable?

I said it on your behalf, because you seem intent on defending an unrealistic idea. But it was more of a joke, to show that you can construct accusations like that from any statement. So let's not take this whole discussion too serious, okay? :)

Of course Hollywood does this all the time, and it's not just with hot women. They also always have to get in the politically correct racial cast proportions, regardless of their accuracy compared to the real world. But that opens up a whole other can of worms. :nono:

Not to mention he's just a great director. He has made plenty of movies that are not his signature gross-weird-fests. Like 'The Dead Zone', 'Spider', 'A History of Violence' and the new one 'Eastern Promises' doesn't look weird. It's probably violent but a SS movie should have its fair share of violence in it too. He's also not an idiot, I'm pretty sure if he read the script for SS2 he would see that there is some mechanical (SHODAN) vs organic (the Many) thing going on and therefore keep the two seperate ie not make the technology semi organic.
The Many would be right up Cronenbergs alley, he would keep it adult, mainstream doesn't really matter to him and he's also on a bit of a roll at the moment. Although if he made it now it would probably have Viggo Mortensen in it as Goggles!

Edit: I could see Sophie Marceau as Delacroix. Her face structure seems right but she would have to wear minimal make-up and have a more 'functional' haricut and wardrobe.
