apparently Caius really likes his moon sugar. speaking of which, i found a Good Skooma Pipe under his bed. Apparently it's an alchemy apparatus, but does anyone know what it actually does?

I believe a Skooma Pipe can function as one of the alchemical apparatii, at a pinch. The alembic, I believe.
And yes, Caius Cosaded is a skooma-addict. If you ask him about "Caius Cosades" when you first meet him, he admits as much - "Just an old man with a skooma problem."
Anyway, what of it. Everyone has defects, imperfections, and character flaws.
My own character has been occasionaly known to perform strange actions (such as dropping items, collecting large amounts of loot and dropping it into a magma flow, and in extreme cases, killing people) for no apparent reason. :erm:

It's a retort. And a low quality one at that. I did a post about this over at Kafein's Corprusarium thread. Retorts lower the magnitude of negative effects when you're making a potion and, IIRC, add to the quality of the potion. A Good Skooma Pipe is the only class of skooma pipe avaliable, but there is a unique Skooma pipe on the road to Caldera from Balmora that sets off a small quest that is rewarded with a small amount of gold and moon sugar. It isn't worth bothering with, IMHO, because once you get the scheme of alchemy, you simply won't need a retort.

Well, if you're starting out, books of alchemical formulas such as the Aurane Frernis scrolls and the book of formulas found in Pelagiad (IIRC, the book is called "Alchemical Formulae") usually don't list any potions with negative effects, and once you've actually gotten used to alchemy, you should know about three to five ingredents with the same effect that are usually easy enough to get and don't share any negative effects, except for one pair or so. The only potion that I've been forced to use a retort on because it had a negative effect lately was a Water Breathing potion.

My mistake. I have a set of Grandmaster Alchemy equipment, and a big chest brimming with ingredients I've collected, but it's been quite a while since I've actually done anything with it. Apologies.

oh! i really didn't know that u can make potions without using retorts....yes i know the side effects thing... but someone said (i think the alchemist in aldruhn mages guild) that u need those four apparati to make potions so i ve never even think that it's possible without any of them... anyway i don't make too much potions....i find them around -there is plenty enough:bored:although they are heavier than homemade ones...
i have a grandmasters set as well though... and chests full of substances... but i don't need potions too much... i use spells and enchantments...
by the way... isn't it possible to take your enchantment skill higher than 100(except using enchantments)? i try to train more but it makes 100 again... :(

There is no way that I know of to increase a given skill past 100 without using console / spells / enchantments. But if you don't know, you can make CE enchantments with a "Fortify Enchant" effect. If you have Tribunal and you are a member of the Temple, you can buy one in the Mournhold Temple. Otherwise...
player -> AddSpell "Imperial Enchant Skill"
...or, if that doesn't work...
player -> AddSpell "Assured Smiting"
However, if you use the latter, you'll have to create a Fortify Enchant spell using spellmaker, because Assured Smiting is for Blunt Weapon, IIRC.

there's also a mod, capremover by mephisto. It lets you raise skills and stats past 100.

I posted this in another thread... I still haven't checked it out but no one said anything. Check the spells you can buy in the Seyda Neen Tradehouse. You can get one called 'Jack of Trades.' I think it gives you the Fortify Attribute spell... or it might be Fortify Skill. One of those two.
