gunsmoke, you didn't get out to fish yet? Thought we'd have heard from you.
I haven't been out this week yet. Hopefully soon. Real life gets in the way of fun.:nono:

Guess what? Last night I went night fishing (about 1 am). I felt something strong as Hell on the line. I thought it to be a carp, the way it felt. I fought it for 15-20 minutes. My dog started going nuts, and that is very atypical behaviour for her. Well, when I got the fish to shore, and flipped on the lantern....a goddamn snapping turtle was staring my dead in the eye. I about lost a finger trying to free it. Most idiot fishermen just cut the line, and let the turtles go with hook still in mouth. I really didn't want to do that. I put some heavy gloves on, and went to work with my needlenose pliers. Safe and sound, I put him back in the water, and he merrily went on his way. Scared the crap out of me, I have never been bitten by one, and I don't want to.
Wait until you run into an (

I've been in lakes with alligators and snakes, but for some reason these freak me. They are the ugliest and meanest suckers around. And they get fucking HUGE.

Holy fuck, who the hell would want that as their wallpaper!?!?
Also, please resurrect and insert this hellbeast into the disturbing animals thread.

Well, I have been fairly active, lately. I found that soft-shell crawfish and minnows(live), are irresistible to the fish around here. They seem to be over-exposed to lures, as they don't work but 1/20th of the time, or so.
Anyway, found that there is some really decent smallmouth bass fishing right under the Main St. bridge. Also bought some Junnie's Sewer Bait (cat dip). Works pretty well around here, as I have been snagging some nice channel cats!.
Can't wait until I get my new camera to show some pics to you!

Go see a big one in real life.
Really they are uber reclusive and don't move much. But they can take fingers off without batting an eye, and the big ones have an even bigger mouth than that.

Well, I got a chance to go on my friend's boat with him and another buddy yesterday, so even though I hadn't slept yet, I grabbed it. The day started off really slowly. Even though the weather service said up to 2 ft. waves, my buddy knew from experience that wasn't going to be the case. We ended up in 2 to 4 footers with the odd 5.5 wave now and then. We had to put the bow cover on. We only caught one walleye and then nothing but sheephead all day, but my friend knew from experience that after about 6 o'clock the wind would calm down and then the fish would be ready. We fished in spot after spot for brief amounts of time until we found an active area, then we kept trolling in that area at about 2.8 miles per hour. We turned the boat slight to the left, then the right, which makes the planer board lines on each side go slightly faster on one side and slightly slower on the other, then vice versa. That was the action that proved to get their attention. Spoons which are usually successful weren't exciting them, but hard body lures were the ticket. We fished until dark. We could have kept fishing but we went back to dock. Some wives worry about their husbands fishing in the dark, which I guess isn't such a terrible thing. My one buddy caught a walleye over 28'' long, you'll see in the picture, it stands out. I caught the steelhead. We all caught a perch and silver bass, and we all just kept reeling in walleyes until we had to head back to shore. Best day so far this year. We cleaned all the fish, and my buddy let me take all the salmon, silver bass, and perch, plus one half fillet of the walleye. They kept all the walleye though, because they are having about 20 guests over on Monday for dinner, and if they may possibly get skunked while fishing on Monday. This way they are still ready for dinner. We figured even at the direct outlet fish store prices (not a supermarket, but sell only fish off the boats), we caught about $300.00 dollars worth of fresh fish. Makes up for bad days, don't you think? Anyway, it was a great day for fishing if you toughed out the weather and didn't quit and head back for shore. My friend said we probably looked like the Three Stooges, but it paid off.

The walleye filled 4 bags and weighed about 8 or 9 lbs. a piece filled. The rest of the bags are what I took home. Man, my buddy's guests are going to have a fantastic feast on Monday night!
P.S. Even though fishing in deep water from a boat can yield these large fish and provide great action, I'm still just as much in my glory on shore fishing a marsh and catching a mess of catfish for dinner. They're both great!
EDIT: My other buddy (the son of my friend with the boat) just brought home a similar catch today, and he gave me some walleye and more silver bass. He's in the Big Boyz tournament, and up until late today he was in first place in the King Salmon category. Over 13 lbs. Beautiful fish.
Fresh caught silver bass for dinner. Delicious.

What a delightful blog this would make!

Yeah, it's getting pretty elaborate. If the mods would like me to transfer this to my own page, just let me know. It has over 2100 views though, so some people might be enjoying the thread right here.
