http://www.3dgathome.com/theadams/cgi-bin/ate him.jpgI ate the walleye in this pile of perch tonight. I didn't eat while in the pile of perch, I mean the walleye in that pile of perch was eaten. My wife cooked him in a cast iron pan with butter and onions on the barbecue and it was absolutely delicious.

My stupid girlfriend RUINED my 40 year old, perfectly seasoned, cast iron pan. She ran it through the fucking dishwasher.:mad::mad:
I need to find out if my aunt Patty has another one she doesn't use anymore.

Takes morning after pill, ruins pots. She trying to tell you something?

I think we need a new thread to discuss gunsmoke's relationship woes. Or at least a tag to keep track.

Nah, didn't turn into any sort of fight or drama, just sayin' it irked me for a bit...

Woah! Take the pan and brillo off any rust. Warm up the pan on a cookie sheet in the oven on medium heat. Put some Crisco in the pan and let it melt all over the sides and bottom of the pan. Dump the Crisco and wipe it with paper towels only. It won't be as seasoned as before, but it will begin anew!
EDIT:Ok, so it has been slower this year than last year, but my buddy in the pic with the two steelhead caught a beautiful nine pounder last night. I was chatting with him on Facebook and he asked me if I wanted one side of it.
I said no thank you. HA! Of course I said yes!
Anyway I skinned it and used needlenose to take out the pin bones (heck, might as well take the time, I was only working on one fillet), and my wife made nuggets again. Oh...MAN! Sooooooo delicious!

Got a couple of rainbow and some walleye and 1 perch (trolling!)

http://www.3dgathome.com/theadams/cgi-bin/fishin'.jpgNot pictured are the four freshwater drum (sheepshead) I kept. So I tried it in strips in salted boiling water and then served with melted butter or seafood sauce like they served it in Michigan Outdoors. Tasted fine, but was chewy, more so than lobster. Then I tried it battered and fried as nuggets with tartar sauce. Again, tasted fine but was on the chewy side. So it's not "garbage fish" but considering that you get only about 25% meat from the fish, and the chewiness when they are in the same lake as rainbow and perch and whitefish and walleye, I can see why they are just thrown back. It's like getting a tender juicy steak or pork chop, or getting a drier and chewier one. The flavour is close to the same, but the texture detracts from the experience. I probably won't bother with it again because the lake has better to offer, but I would eat it if it were served to me.
It was a nice day and good conversation with a friend, and some nice fishing action, plus some nice perch and walleye and rainbow for the freezer.:thumb:
EDIT: I forgot to add that while cleaning the drum, they do smell a bit more "visceral" than other fish, so that may have turned off more than one fisherman back in the day when these fish were gaining their reputation.
ANOTHER EDIT: another good point about fishing. My friend and I each paid about $20 in gas for a day of fishing. That's about the same cost as a movie and a drive-thru meal. However, the entertainment you get from fishing has the added dividend of giving you groceries. Here's my half of the catch fully cleaned (not counting the experiment of eating sheepshead) in the freezer. I put a pop can next to it for perspective. This is a lot of meals for $20, besides the fact that I had so much fun. It's a twofold payoff.

Wow! Great stuff (last 2 posts)! I have been busy, and didn't get to update the thread, but this weekend was really great. I finally got to the bait/tackle shop to get some new lures, line, and live bait. I bought some twisters, new float bobs. Fill you in later on results!

Take pics if you can!:thumb:
EDIT:Hey gunsmoke if you're targetting (targeting...for you Americans) largemouth bass you may want to try this, especially without a boat, because you can cast it like a bullet! You can take a few inches of the PowerBait and cover each of the treble's points, with just a tiny point showing through, almost not. This Luhr Jensen Krocodile is not too expensive, the whole thing is two inches long, it's really flashy in the water with a great action, and it's 1/8th" thick so a spincast has no trouble getting it where you want to put it. Largemouth seem to go for different things at different times, but in more open canals I've seen bass come rushing after this setup with mouths agape. So cool to see them chase it down and set the hook. Cast it past where you think the bass is and reel it back relatively quickly over and over. Works better on bright days.

Perch, catfish, and rock bass enjoyed quite thoroughly today, by me, my boy and his friend. Could have done without enough mosquitoes to hum at about 25 dB, but repellent worked. They still annoy you though. Someone that my boy serves at the bait shop every weekend gave us his perch as well because he was too tired to take them home and clean them. My poor wife, we show up at home around 10:50 P.M. with a bucket of fish, and she just sighs. She makes great fish nuggets, even at 11:30 at night. I hadn't tasted Rock Bass since I was around thirteen or fourteen. I forgot how sweet and tasty they are. My boy and his friend can't believe they threw so many of those back in the water up north! They had no idea they tasted so great!
EDIT:I also showed the boys the time consuming old-school method of filleting small fish so there's minimal wasted meat. If you only have nine perch, one rock bass, and one catfish, it's worth it. If you have 100 perch, a little extra waste to save a lot of time seems like less of a big deal.
