Sorry 'bout the 'little lady' quip. Anyway, I remember that story of the human remains, but damn, that looks exactly like a whale shark. To me, the spots are a big giveaway. They also have been reported to get stuck in rivers occasionally, but who knows, I am certainly no icthyologist. (though I sure as Hell know some fishermen who think THEY are ;))
Is it raining today (saturday) up there? We have been getting a nice, steady, soaking rain most of the day. I had the day off, and was even awake shortly before the sun. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the river on this, the perfect fishing day :(

:laff: For sure it's a whale shark!:laff:
My boy thought people might think I believed it - too subtle - that's why I edited and added the real records a little while later. :)
You should read some of the forum posts in that article. Some of the posters really believed it! First thing you can see immediately is that there are flexible gills like a shark (they bent easily in the picture on the side it's leaning) and catfish have an operculum like any fish.
EDIT: It reminds me of the websites that try to convince people that Mr. Ed from the TV show wasn't a horse but a zebra! One actually says it's because the hues are the same so they don't show up in black and white TV. They have a colour picture of a zebra with a button underneath. If you push the button, it's supposed to show you what the zebra looks like in black and white, but it switches to a picture of Mr. Ed!
Oops! Sorry, yes it rained earlier today, but the kids fishing derby took place anyway, and kids were catching perch off the dock.
gunsmoke on 12/7/2009 at 14:46
What was the fishing derby like? I am assuming you were there :D
I am hoping to try out my Homemade Big Walnut Crossing Device⢠again. My girlfriend said I am not allowed to, but I deflated it and stashed it down it a hollow log by my 'launch', instead of throwing it away. lol. I figure if I leave with my wide-bladed plastic snow shovel, as opposed to my paddle, she won't know what I am up to. I often leave with random things, so it shouldb't raise any suspicion. :D . It is a bit cloudy and mild. Haven't made up my mind what I am targeting today. The best catches oft come from improvisation, in my experience.

As soon as the rain ended kids were getting double-headers. I wasn't there. My kids are too old for that derby now, and Jonah had to work at the bait shop anyway. It was a good day for it though. Perch have been hit and miss with the cooler temperatures and the different direction winds lately, so I'm glad the perch were around the docks for the kids that day.
Is your crossing device an inner tube?

I am moving around a bit, looking for a nice new spot, and found a way to get to an unaccessible spot across the river (There is a huge, sheer 'cliff' behind it, and you simply can't get there safely with all your gear). I took an inflateable baby pool down there, and a small paddle. Well, I floated over there! Had to paddle like hell, but I made it. It is cool, as the bank is extremely undercut, and there is a fallen tree there. I knew there were some big, old, wise fish just chilling out there staying out of the way
Anyway, WAY too hot and sunny in the times I can get over to fish somewhere lately. :( So, I decided I would go to the tackle/bait shop to look for artificial lures tomorrow. Any recommendations based on what tiny, little you know about where I fish, how I fish, and what I fish for? Thanks!

Sorry, forgot about your previous post regarding the baby pool. Um, your girlfriend is right about that. Right? You're a true fisherman though, to go through that effort.
If you want cheap stinky bait for channel cats buy liver from the store. It smells, it's soft, and the blood drifts with the current for them to find it. Never read that in any fishing mag, but they go for it in my pond, but for artificial the best success I had was a sinking mini fat rap as per my previous post. Deep diving cranks are something some swear by.
Remember my story about the black fellow targetting large bluegills for supper? He was expertly fishing them. He was great. All he was using was a little hook that had a black shiny "body" that was the size and colour of a large ant or beetle. He cast to his left, started reeling in sideways, and sped up with a couple of tiny jerks when he saw a big one look curious. Fastest meal I ever saw anyone catch. He kept putting them in the basket, replacing the smallest with his latest catch, until he had all large ones. Twenty minutes tops and he had a half hour or more of fish cleaning to do. I would look for something like that in the store. Wish I knew what they were called, sorry.
Large mouth I had my best catching with a hand made set of "creatures". Just take larger plastic baits and melt smaller plastic baits for legs and arms by holding them together over a candle. Best part about that is you can put light coloured legs on dark bodies and vice versa, so it attracts attention in all water and light conditions. Of course, they like cover and to ambush their prey, so you may be better off buying a bait that imitates what they most like in their body of water. Best way to tell is to buy a minnow trap and put bread in it. Go back the next morning, and match colours to those guys. Take a pic with your cellphone and just hold it next to your bait, buy closest match. I love catching largemouth, but it's always different. I can never quite 100% figure them out. I guess that's why they are so much fun.
