I want to catch it because it is a challenge. I am about to go down right now, and see what I can rustle up. Just some doughballs for the bottom feeders.

I know what you mean. The trickier something is to catch, the more you want to catch it. Tocky, yes, gar back meat is edible and good, just a bit of work to get. Then again, this is coming from someone who has eaten sheephead.

I ate a sheephead last week. My buddy caught and cooked it and I tried a bit. took a bit of butter and hot sauce. What is a good recommended bait for the Gar?

best thing to do is match whatever is in the water. Give 'em what they're used to. Little extra work, but knowing what's in the water helps. Overnight minnow trap will tell the tale.
EDIT: Check with your local regulations. Some depts. want your name and address on overnight minnow traps.

Well that was harsh and impertinent.
On the gar thing, you have to understand what an annoyance they can be to someone who remembers a time when you could stack coolers full of crappie at a lake only to see it overrun. They steal minnows when you are lucky and when not you have to land them. Not fun to cut your line, club them, or needlenose it while they try to bite you. They can be surprisingly quick.
Still, largest fish of any sort I've ever caught so I shouldn't feel too harsh toward them. It gave me that empty feeling in the pit of my stomach to wonder if I really wanted to see what was that heavy and sluggish. Not a lot of fight for something so sleek, as if it didn't particularly care and only surfaced to see what had hooked it. I caught it on an H&H oddly when I was casting near the bank for bass. I was pulling it slow through the deep having lost hope once clearing the weeds and brush. Thought I had hung a stump till it decided to move a bit. Good luck and keep your fingers clear.
