What size hooks were you using? If she has a hard time setting, sometimes #4 or #6 lets the fish grab the whole thing at once and take off with it. If you intend to eat them, you don't have to fret about the hook getting swallowed too deep. Tell her to picture a orchestra conductor with a baton, with that quick upward swing. Tell her to lift that rod like that when she feels the tug.
Largemouth and smallmouth taste good. Hey did you take any pics?

Yeah, she gets really excited and starts reeling in furiously and jerks the pole. I am trying to get her in the habit of keeping her right hand off the reel and on the rod. And no, sadly I don't have my camera right now, it is at the in-laws. Soon, though!!!
I am using #8 hooks by the way. Just got them yesterday along with some new line(12 lb.), split shot, hooks, and nightcrawlers.

She caught her first fish!!! A 4" baby smallmouth bass. THEN, she caught a 6" bluegill! I am so proud of her.
We were only there 45 minutes, and I had the pole long enough to catch a couple myself.
I really am going to go nuts if we actually go through this breakup. :(:(:(

Stitch, do you have anything worthwhile to add to this fascinating saga, any fishing stories or home-made preparations for carp that you'd like to add to this discussion?
I think not.
Please stop disrupting this engaging and not-at-all spamworthy discourse.
