Can't use gun. Doing something wrong? - by Ninjastar*

Hi all. Just bought this great game. Started a bit blind not knowing what to expect. Chose OSA character. I think I'm quite a way into the game, I just had that bizarre trippy dream-cutscene where I float through a red alien environment with disembodied voices. I've relied completly on my wrench even though I have a pistol and loads of ammo. How do I upgrade so I can equip and use the gun? I'm in a constant state of terror using the wrench. Btw I'm on impossible setting. What a game...thanks in advance.

Impossible, eh? Yikes, that's quite the introduction to the Von Braun! :p And wrench-only so far too!
To use the gun (I presume it's a pistol) you need to use cyber-modules to upgrade your stats and abilities. You should probably have quite a few by now.
You need to find a cyber-upgrade unit and put some points into Standard weapons skill - with at least 1 rank in that you should be able to use the pistol.

If you head back the way you came (past the large pillar where you saw your vision and through the bulkhead), the large room with the two turrets and camera has a smaller security room with a couple of upgrade stations in it. If you go all the way back to the Medical Deck, there will be more; in the area just before you met your first hybrids, on the lower level, there are all four types of upgrade units positioned on the four sides of the pillar there.
The SS2 manual, on pages 23-31, talks about the different types of skills you can buy from those upgrade units and what they're good for. If you don't have a paper copy of the manual, you can download one (

Hope you're enjoying the game! It's truly one of the best out there. :) Kudos for having the nerves to play it on Impossible for the first time! :thumb:

I remember the first time I tried playing SS2, I picked Impossible. Made it about halfway through the first map, constantly dying, and decided to go for Hard instead.
Probably one of the only games where I did that, I'm usually masochistically stubborn about only playing games at the hardest difficulty setting.

Well, at least you'll have plenty of ammo if you keep using the trusty wrench, that's for sure. (alternatively, you could always follow (

I hardly think reading a walkthrough is a good idea before you've finished your first playthrough...

Very true. TNT and I didn't dance around spoilers, so don't go through that on your first game.

Hi guys, just read responses, thanks. Well, I worked it out. This happened to me with deus ex years ago. I nearly completed that game without knowing about the upgrade side of things! I was literally unstoppable for the last hour of play! Same here with ss2, I've worked it out and am now using weapons ( thank god ). What a great game...

You're welcome, and welcome to TTLG!
