I just got Deus Ex: IW (clearance, $10 at Target! Woo!), and am considering making it the one game I play all the way through before classes start. However, my lowly system (of course) chugs under the weight of bloaty code.
Patch 1.1 let me play the game without shadows, which greatly increased playability. Patch 1.2 claims to boost performance even further, but for some reason, I can no longer turn shadows off, nixing any such boost. :( The menu option exists to turn off shadows, but appears to have no affect.
Anyone else run into this? I did but a cursory forum search, so feel free to curse me in turn if I did not do so thoroughly. I'd really like to have the best of both worlds.
Also, if anyone knows of a (legal) trick to keep from having to insert the CD every time I play, let me know. (Other than Daemon Tools.) For some reason, the original Deus Ex never bugged me about this.
