After having a blast playing through the Dark Project some weeks ago, I decided to buy Thief 2 off Ebay. I had quite a few technical problems playing the first game but nothing I couldn't fix with the help of the great (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031) FAQ you guys put together.
I had no luck with Thief 2, though. Whatever I do, the game keeps crashing right after I launch it. At first, I was getting the "Cannot find CD-ROM" message, so I installed the premier patch, which fixed that issue. But now I'm stuck with a damn error message everytime I try to play the game. I went over pretty much everything in the FAQ but I can't seem to find the right solution. The crash is probably related to the intro video, since I had the same problem with T1. With T1, I was able to fix it by installing the Indeo 5 codec and running "regsvr32 ir50_32.dll" but it doesn't seem to work with T2. Is there anything else I can do?
Specs:
XP SP3
Intel Core 2 CPU
6400 2.13GHz
3.25 RAM

Did you set it for a single core on the CPU usage?
Did you set the compatability for W98 or W2000, and try that?
What is the Vcard? Nvidia and GeForce cards have problems with THIEF.
Did you check your card model and the Drivers against the known fail to work cards in the forums (try SEARCH THIS FORUM) and the Tech forum.
Have you considered DDFIX?

1. Yeah, that's the only way I was able to play TDP without it freezing a few seconds after loading a mission, so it's the first thing I did before launching T2 for the first time.
2. I'm not a big tech guy but I thought compatibility mode was a Vista-only feature. If there's a way to do it with XP, please tell me how and I'll try that.
3 and 4. ATI Radeon. But I don't think it's related to my video card since I can play the first game just fine.
5. I tried it yesterday. Didn't work.
Is there any way I can get a link to an unprotected .exe of the game to see if the problem is coming from the premier patch I installed?

Right click the EXE, and select properties. It will offer compatablity settings.
If your version is the SOLDOUT or PREMIER, then you have the right patch.
If it is the US version, then you need the other patch. In which case, uninstall and start over then apply the patch.
If you have an install on the HDD, then select the "panel exe" or the "thief Exe" and right click check PROPERTIES. Look at the bottom line. If the version listed is 1.18 you are patched.
If you aren't sure, put in the GAME disc. Quit when the panel comes up.
Go to My Computer. Open the CD THIEF, and read the properties on the THIEF EXE, or the PANEL EXE.
Again look at the last line in the PRODUCT version. If it says 1.18 you don't need any patch. If it says other then you need the proper patch.
You don't say where you live, what you purchased, so as I said, if it is the UK version you need the Premier patch. If it is the US, you need the other patch. Both can be found here:

I also suggest you reset your profile to allow PM messages. You can keep the EM secret, but PM is a often good, or the best, way to get quick answers and more detail.

Hmm, my Sold-out version uses the regular patch. Are there different sold-out versions? :weird:

Soldout and Premier use the Premier patch. That is unless changes have been made in the last few years.
The EIDOS US patch used a different security algorithym (or maybe it was the Premier, I disremember at the moment).

Well, I've tested both patches twice. No dice, it still crashes on startup. The compatibility thing didn't work either. Is there a simple way to disable cutscenes, just to get that out of the way?
Also, I have no idea how to allow PMs. Couldn't seem to find that option in my User CP

Could you post any info you can get on the crash? I'd be interested to see which module it says is failing specifically.

Go to your PROFILE. Look at QUICK LINKS. In the menu open User control panel you will see SETTINGS AND OPTIONS. EDIT your information to allow PMs and whatever else you want in the following:
