IVe been having trouble joining the Thieves Guild. Every time I speak to someone to let me join, they say "We have expectations, Wood Elf, and you do not meet them." However, I have fairly high stats and am level 36.
Also, I killed Elmussa Damori, pissing off the Thieves Guild. Is there any way to redeem myself to the Thieves Guild? I want to join it.

When I wanted to join the Thieves' Guild I talked to Sugar-Lips at the South Wall Cornerclub in Balmora. As far as I know that's the only person who lets you join the guild. So if even she doesn't like you, the guild might be closed for you permanently.

Hrm... while I haven't checked this explicitly, I believe you can join at any Thieves' Guild place. The heads of the Thieves' guild are Big Helende in Sadrith Mora's Dirty Muriel Cornerclub, Aengoth the Jeweler in Ald'Ruhn's Rat in the Pot, Sugar-Lips Habasi in Balmora's South Wall Cornerclub (of course), and Gentleman Jim Stacey in Vivec's Simione <something>'s bookstore.
The message there, though, means that you don't have the skills & stats required to join. It might be as simple as you not having any Thief-type skills (as defined in the manual).
As to redeeming yourself, good question; that's the one NPC they all are rigged to care about, and noone in the guild will trade with you until you out-rank them if you've betrayed or killed her. I don't think that'll stop you from joining, but I know they won't trade with you until then.

I encountered this problem in one of my early attempts, and no matter what skills I possessed (including security/sneak skills) I was always told "you don't meet our requirements" no matter which thief guild member I spoke to. In the end I started a new game and made sure they accepted me before joining any other guild! I hadn't killed any members, or stolen from them that I could think of. Maybe a random thing?

Quite bizarre, Shadow Crow; the "We have our standards, %PCRace, and you do not meet them." dialogue should only be triggered if your skills/stats are below the faction's minimums.

the "we have our standards, breton, and you don't meet them...blah,blah" doesn't have anything to do with character attributes in this instance....i have also encountered this problem and it is due to conflicts w/ the fighter's guild...if you have completed the first few quests for the balmora guild them habassi and the other guild stewards for the thieves give you the same response...

Cute... I can only guess that the Thieves' Guild team got the engine team to hack up the Dialogue function ("Rank Requirement", or something like that) that does that test.

I had joined the fighters guild first of all too...perhaps there is a major conflict of interest? Is it better when starting off to join all the guilds you want before starting their individual quests to ensure membership perhaps?

LOL my friend has started playing now also and he joined the fighters guild first but did not complete the first quest for them after finding the guy, instead he went right to the head thief int hte coner club there joined right away, hmmm... he is now also a member manyother guilds including the assisn guild which seems to have a conflict with the thief guild but he has had no problems as of yet.

If you rise to the rank of swordsman(maybe even lower rank) in the fightersguild before you join the thieves guild, you are not allowed in... probably something to do with the codebook quest...
