Why does it need so much space on drive C. I can't install on drive d because drive c doesn't have enough space. All that's on C is windows so I can't make any more space withought reformatting...

i assume you're refering to the Arx demo ;)
Hmm...the only way i can think of to get past that is to move the file you downloaded onto a cd....if you have a cd burner. And then run it from the cd....
You really need to get a larger hard drive though if you expect to be able to play all these new games comming out this year...they'll probably be taking up well over 1gb of hard drive space.

Actually I have a 30gig hd, but it's partitioned, and it won't let me install withough putting something on drive c. Of course, C is small because I just use it for the basic windows files.

You shouldn't have to reformat. I have ten partitions on my disk and I used Partition Magic 6 to increase the size of C: by 400 Mb and move the other partitions just last week. Just make sure that you defragment all partitions first before doing this. You should also backup all important files first. I also recommend running scandisk straight after this to correct any incorrect size info in the boot record. Unfortunately, a lot of programs still insist on using "Windows/Temp" despite the fact that you have your swap file on another HD or partition, so a very small c: partition ends up causing problems (despite what a lot of guides claim).

d:\
md temp
SET TEMP=D:\TEMP
SET TMP=D:\TEMP
& it should work fine
of course if they didnt use a crappy installer to begin with.....

& it should work fineYes, it should, but it doesn't, because the demo unzips itself to Program Files\Common Files\Wise Installation Wizard regardless of %TEMP%. AND it comes in a non-standard format, so I can't use Winzip to decompress it. AND there's no dialog box asking me where I want to uncompress.
Repartitioning my whole drive just to install a demo, just because the Arkane bozos are too lazy to write/license a decent installer? No thanks, not when the recycle bin is right there. What an easy way to free up 150MB.
I hope for their sake they take quality control of the actual game more seriously.

First I think you need to take a deep breath and relax. Not many game companies come out with demos anymore. I for one am glad this company took the time to make a demo for us. The dev guys constantly monitor the boards for any criticisims. They are looking for any problems with the demo to correct them for the game. Having said that I think you were a bit too harsh in your complaint. Constructive criticism goes a lot farther than plain anger. You may not want to hear this but I think most of the problem is on your H.D. and not the installer. If you had not made such small partitions then you would not have had any problems installing the demo. After all you didn't pay for the demo now did you? As I look back through the archives I didn't find any other complaints of not being able to install the game because of partition size.
All I am saying is relax and direct your criticisms in a more constructive manner. Rudeness never got anyone anywhere on the boards.:)

Then you didn't look hard enough. Quite some people had the same problem. The installer is just too dump, it liters several hundreds of MBs all around the place, and then complains it can not install into drive D:, just because drive C: hasn't more than 300 MB free space (even though it shouldn't install *anything* at all in C:)
And a couple of years ago, when I made *my* windows installation, I only had 8 Gig on the whole HD, and 1 gig did go to C: several to Linux, and 2 more to D:
I bought a new 20 Gig, and that became D (D: shifted to E:) but it seems that for the idiotic installer I would have to re-install the entire system. Excuse me? For a game? I don't have time for that...
Now fortunately you can move the 150 MB msi file from C: to any drive you like (somewhere in "C:\Program Files\Wise Installer") and just execute it.
If I wouldn't have found that out, I wouldn't even have bothered with Arx any further.
Just because it works on your system doesn't mean it is not broken.
Cheers,
Tels

I did apparently miss the past posts about this problem. But I still think calling the dev guys Arkane bozos is a bit too harsh.

You can also change the location of the Common Program Files Folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files) with either a tweaker or regedit.
