I keep getting an error message whenever I try to install Thief II:
Error:C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1Temp\ccbc_appcompat.txt
I am running Windows XP & I've read that T2 has compatibility problems with XP. However, I've never had any problems with Thief I (why is this so??, you'd think it would be the other way around).
Whatever. Hope this is enough info.
I did read the troubleshooting stuff, tried the ideas there but nothing worked.
Anyway, thanks for any help you can come up with.

Regarding Compatibility with XP, Thief runs just fine. Whats the retail version of Thief2 you have and what version of Xp are you running.

Hi Bikerdude
Re. Your questions: XP version is 20080414.031525. Well, that's what it says, anyway I have service pack 3.
Re. the version of T2. Not sure actually as I can't get into the programme to have a look. However, I have to confess I brought it second hand on Ebay. The person who sold it to me said that they had no problems getting it to run. Seeing as I paid about $5 for it, I can't see the point of getting all huffy and sending it back.
The front cover just says Thief II the metal age. No dates or anything useful like that.
Sorry I can't give any more info.
Thanks for you help

Does the Thief 2 packaging say anything like "Sold Out", or "Eidos Premier" or anything like that? What does the physical disc say other than Thief 2? Is the game packaging a trapezoid cardboard box, a DVD case, or a CD jewel case? This may help us pin down what version it is :)
Do you get the same error when installing using the command line "D:\setup.exe -lgntforce" when logged in with administrator rights? This bypasses the Windows NT "feature" in the installer.

The case itself is what I'd call a CD case, with 4 CDs in it: the inslallation CD, the game CD, the manual and demos. Brown, with Garrett looking all moody in a monk's robe.
It doesn't seem to have any other wording.
I tried that command line, but am not sure if I'm doing it correctly. the computer just says it can't find it.
In case you haven't noticed, I'm a computer dunderhead ...

Ah yes I forgot about this..

OK, here's some steps for installing:
1) Go to My Computer in Windows, and make a note of the letter of the CD drive (usually it is D).
2) Go to the Command Prompt (Start->Run and type "cmd" without the quotes).
3) Type "D:" (again without the quotes) in the command prompt, or whatever letter step (1) gave you.
4) In the command prompt, now type "SETUP.EXE -LGNTFORCE" (again without the quotes). If that doesn't work, try the same command in lower-case letters.
Good luck!

I'll give that a whirl. See what happens.
Perhaps I could just go out a buy a new copy ...

Just thought I'd update this:
Got it working. I brought another NEW game & it's humming along very nicely. Thanks for all your help, though.
Should have done that in the first place I guess ...:thumb:
