Well, you do have a slow GPU and only 1 GB of memory.

Well, yeah :p
Switched the game to windowed mode and got a HUGE performance boost, now I am enjoying the game quite lots.

The only stutters I got were when another character came within radar range (I think it was loading the profile data). This wasn't really noticeable with 2-3 stalkers, but in the bar it got up to maybe 20 seconds (loading everyone at once) :/

Is there a way to stop the game from preloading items? Like a command?
I'd love a command that I can set to 0 right before I get in "preload range" with my stash in the bar, and then set to 1 again when I'm going on a trip. Since I never drop items in the bar, it is pointless to spend 45 seconds every single fucking time I enter the area, waiting for them to preload.

afaik you must restart the game for preload / no preload.
no way to change it on the fly or for each mapload.
you have to edit your STALKER start icon and put "-noprefetch" at the end of the command. (-nointro disables the ads and the first intro movie)

I think I've tried -noprefetch before and it didn't make any visible changes in-game. :erm:

On my A64 3000+, 1GB, 7600GT the framerate is normally in range of 18-40 on med-high details, full HDR and 75 % textures in 1152x864. However, there is some occassional stuttering. Loading times are bearable with noprefetch command. Go figure then, but Stalker also benefits from dual cores.
Sgt_BFG's rig would offer a decent gameplay, but X1300 is somehow a downer. That CPU would deserve more powerful graphics card to cooperate with.
