It's a bit more along the lines of thinking the Adam West Batman series was retarded, though. Or being annoyed if there was a movie made wherein Gollum was some slick and dapper evil genius character.
My point being that you are essentially bemoaning the very incarnation of Bond that has entered the cultural lexicon. This is entirely fair, but to a guy like me who has only seen a couple Bond movies your comment is akin to "I only like the James Bond movies where he isn't James Bond."
Of course, I did think Coldplay was better before they turned into Coldplay, so who am I to talk?

I liked you better before you sold out!

No, no, remember his hissy fit from the GRRM threads, he only likes things before it gets cool. That's how he rolls.
And WAITAMINUTE... Superman didn't FLY?

I do like the James Bond movies... even most of the post-Connery / Moore ones. They're great action films, full of wicked stunts and cool dialogue and lots of gunfire. Shit, I even liked that one with Halle Berry in it, even though it had more product placement than a Coke commercial.
It's just that the books are more than excellent in their own right, and the character as written by Fleming was less Remington Steele and more Jack Bauer. I don't even have a problem with deliberate camp... the original Star Trek series as well as the Adam West Batman are things I used to (and still do) enjoy watching.
We could have had dozens of really excellent films about James Bond instead of what amounts to The Saint, though. It's disappointing that things went the way they did when staying faithful to the books would have resulted in something just as good, but grittier, dirtier, and overall more realistic (relatively speaking).
I guess it's the same as the Burton / Nolan Batman movies vs the Schumacher ones.
And no, Superman didn't fucking fly. He could JUMP real far -- for the same reasons that he was wicked strong and had crazy dense skin that bullets would ping off of.

<strike>What's so Super about that?</strike> Gah, your edit made him Superer. >:(
And I agree on the "we coulda had BOND movies" point. It would've been cool to see some honest-to-god coldwar era proper spy stuff.
And finally, someone else says that they enjoyed "Die Another Day" -- I actually thought this was one of the most entertaining Bonds in a while, much better than that dreadful "Tomorrow Never Dies".

Not originally, though he started flying a few years after the comics started.

Bond in the books has dark brown or possibly black hair. Early on in Casino Royale he is described asleep, with his hair falling onto his forehead in "a dark comma." He is also described as a "blunt instrument" and a "resource of last resort" because he tends to solve problems by destroying them. He had a license to kill because he not only didn't mind it, he found it an easy way to solve problems, even though he was very smart and often had other options.
Timothy Dalton was the only actor to give the impression that Bond was, indeed, a ruthless killer and a right bastard. It's too bad they gave him such crappy scripts and the stylist and editor hated him. He's a dead ringer for Bond as he was described by Fleming up through The Hildebrandt Rarity.
Connery has a load of charm and I liked him in the part in spite of the silliness, but his Bond is not the dyed-in-the-wool bastard Flemming described. Moore was wooden and the scripts relied too heavily on clever toys and quips. Lazenby was a good physical fit, but he couldn't act. Dalton was wonderful, but hobbled by politically-correct scripts. Brosnan would have been good if they hadn't made the scripts into 2-hour commercials full of wisecracks instead of Bond.
Craig's success will depend entirely on the script and the direction the company has chosen to go. He's a good enough actor and his physical look is wrong, but really doesn't matter. They can always dye his hair if they feel they have to.

Well yeah, nothing is any good if other people like it.

Bond is total fookin shite anyway - pseudo-suave excreted pop culture bs  I hope he runs the shit into the ground so we don't have to hear about this irrelevant bollocks and can all get back to our russian lit like nice little private schoolboys already.
